Another amazing stay at the Osaka Intercontinental. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcomed and cared for. The food was a standout—beautifully prepared, whether it was a relaxed breakfast or a more refined dinner. The service in this Hotel is extraordinary. Between the comfortable rooms, the inviting atmosphere, and the consistently thoughtful hospitality, it was the kind of experience that leaves you wishing you could stay just a little longer.

There is a particular sadness reserved for brands that once understood 5 star luxury and have since fallen into the care of people who seem to regard standards as an optional extra. InterContinental Osaka is one of those places. It is not a disaster in the vulgar sense, which would at least show some energy. It is something worse: a grand old name drifting lazily on reputation while the details, those tiny and crucial proofs of care, quietly rot at the edges. Whilst the check-in was handled well (Vladimir), breakfast was an example of unmasking. The restaurant had the unmistakable air of a room that has stopped being loved. The furnishings were tired, the chairs were fraying, bits hanging loose in a way that suggested nobody senior had looked at them properly in months, and the bases of the breakfast tables were stained and strewn with crumbs from dinner or yesterday’s breakfast, even, which is the sort of thing one notices immediately when a hotel insists on charging luxury prices. It is also the sort of thing that tells you, in an instant, how the day is going to go. Though the restaurant was nearly empty, I was placed on a table jammed into the corner beside the waiters’ station instead of by the window, as though one had committed some social crime simply by arriving for breakfast. Coffee took fifteen minutes to appear. When my wife joined me, hers never came at all. And one sat there, as one so often does in declining luxury hotels, wondering not merely whether anybody cared, but whether anybody had noticed that caring was once the entire business model. The buffet was, in every sense, exhausted. The food itself was average, but average in a way that felt complacent rather than unfortunate. The presentation looked as though it had been borrowed from a business hotel buffet of ten years ago, preserved in the amber of managerial indifference. The beans were cold. The chef, rather than giving the impression of stewardship or attention, was seen leaning against the wall, which may not be a crime in law, but is not ideal symbolism in a breakfast room already pleading guilty to neglect. Elsewhere, the tone did not improve. At departure, despite there being three bell staff on shift, my wife and I carried our own luggage all the way to the car. This is not some microscopic complaint from the overpampered. It is a basic service marker for a hotel trading under the InterContinental name. If three bell staff can watch guests carry their own bags without embarrassment or intervention, then no staffing issue is being witnessed. One is witnessing a cultural issue. The Michelin-starred restaurant was nothing short of a hotel's drive to get the accolade, but it didn't deliver on the basics of a good meal. Gerad, the Director of F&B, made multiple promises and suggestions but unfortunately didn't deliver on any of them. The room, to be fair, tried harder than the public spaces. At first glance, it seemed well-appointed, and the minibar in particular had been stocked with enough thought to suggest that somewhere in the building there are still people who remember what standards look like. But then one tried to live in the room, which is always the true test of hotel design, and the illusion began to buckle. For a room with many lights, it was curiously dim. Not moody, not atmospheric, just badly lit. For anyone who actually needs to read, particularly a guest who wears glasses, it was absurdly impractical. The labels on the light switches were hard to read, and the shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom were similarly illegible in the gloom. The toothbrush in the room was stupid to put it mildly, falling apart in my mouth. I was left with a mouthful of bristles and uncleaned teeth. Form over function, it appears. These are not rarefied complaints. This is not a tantrum about thread count or orchid placement. These are the basics. If a luxury hotel cannot help a guest see the things it expects him to use, then it is failing in the plainest possible way. Even the front office at check-out seemed to have lost faith in the act. The staff wore what appeared to be Paul Smith suits, but they hung badly, looked stained, and seemed badly in need of pressing or dry cleaning. One does not expect Savile Row perfection at a hotel desk, but one does expect staff not to look as though they have slept in the uniform during a difficult divorce. Appearance matters because presentation is part of the promise. Luxury is theatre, yes, but it is theatre that depends upon everyone remembering their lines and costumes. Here, the costume department seemed to have given up. And that, in the end, is the overwhelming impression InterContinental Osaka leaves behind: not rage, not scandal, not even the lurid incompetence of a truly dreadful hotel. Rather, a profound and dispiriting sense that nobody is minding the standard. The brand still speaks in the voice of prestige, but the property answers in the accent of decline. InterContinental was once one of the world's great hotel names. On this showing, I would not put it in the top five now. Not remotely. This hotel is four-star at best, and even that feels more like a charitable memory than a present reality. C’est la vie.
