My parents and I stayed at Majlis for two nights and had a mixed experience. They don’t travel much, so they were delighted with the property. However, I am a seasoned luxury traveler and noticed many shortcomings. The Good The beach is clean and beautiful, as is the property. There was no garbage, and we weren’t harassed by men selling wares. Our boat escort, Bonnie, was delightful and made us feel safe and welcome upon arrival. The aesthetic of Majlis is meant to feel like you’ve stepped back in time, and it was done in a tasteful way. My parents also visited the spa for massages and loved it. The rooms are air-conditioned and large. Breakfast was tasty, and the service there was the most prompt. Dinner was also tasty for the most part, but there were problems, which leads me to... The Bad Umi restaurant needs serious attention. Dinner both nights took 70+ minutes to be prepared for four people, which is waaay too long for any decent hotel. The first night, my dad ordered the snapper, which they said was “the catch of the day.” I am 99% sure that fish was frozen. It was rock-hard and dry, and he had to use a knife to hack at it. After the meal, I gave feedback to the manager that service was incredibly slow, and the second night it wasn’t any faster. However, our server, Martins, was attentive and polite despite not having food to bring us. Umi also serves as the kitchen for those sitting on the beach, but during the daytime, servers don’t come unprompted. I had to constantly ask the beach attendant to fetch someone so I could order food and drinks. Majlis would greatly increase its profit margins if staff were trained to regularly check in and ask guests if they would like to order. Housekeeping also needs work. My parents had just one towel in their room and no robes. My room was missing face towels and a robe. Staff made up the beds midday but didn’t change dirty towels or replace items from the vanity kit. Eva at the front desk did her best to address the issues, but it was a bit disappointing to have to ask for these standard items. Also note that guests are charged for water if they drink more than two bottles. The other thing that was off-putting was the room padlock doors with one bulky key. If you separate from your roommate, you have to either leave the door unlocked or lock them in and call staff to let them out. It was inconvenient and a potential fire hazard. I also didn’t understand the purpose of the towel card system. Guests had to turn in a card to get one thin blue beach towel, whereas at other properties guests are simply told not to take beach towels to their rooms. The card became another thing to carry in addition to the bulky key and oil for sand flies. It just didn’t seem necessary. In short, Majlis is perfectly fine for the occasional traveler. But if you travel frequently or are used to luxury properties, you may find it underwhelming.
