Beautiful resort, aesthetically pleasing. Plenty of entertainment and food. I thought service was great everywhere, love the ice cream shop. Overall food was good, but I came down with severe stomach cramping, bloating, diarrhea, fever, chills etc on night #4 after eating at the Asian restaurant. Spent a lot of the rest of my days in bed. Went to resort doctor and was diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis and got meds but did not help. Returned to the States and I’m at the ER right now typing this as it’s been almost a week now with this stomach cramping and bloat.

Very commercialized with white and grey sterile, but fancy decor. Felt more like staying in a fancy California resort than in Mexico. Not as much greenery or tropical vibes, no real walking places or scenic local trails nearby. The staff were very friendly and animated despite the low energy from the crowds each night. The parties were fun and the evening entertainment was worthwhile to get out and watch. The AC in my room sounded like a tin can attached to a bike tire with loud rattling all night long, but no idea if that's the norm. The weather was great, the beach was big and open with no sun cover. If you want to be in the shade and on the beach you'll have to bring your own umbrella or people were renting them for $20 USD a day. If you just want shade though there were tons of options around the pool to sit in the shade under umbrellas or roll out covers. On the beach there are life jacket and boogie board rentals off to the left under a small white canopy/tent. This is provided by the hotel and is free for 1 hr. Lots of different food options, the A La Cartes are mostly not worth the experience though. The only way to get a table is to line up outside the restaurant at 5pm until they open at 6 and then depending on how long the line is you'll either be seated or told to come back later. There's no way to book in advance or call and reserve, it's just a weird day-of line up. Additionally most all of the food offered at the A La Cartes and other restaurants are served on the main dinner buffet. The steak was the only one I don't think is served on buffet, otherwise you can pretty much get everything at some point during the buffet. Also half of the restaurants are buffet style still, even though I thought the point was to order off a menu. There are nice massage booths on the beach that only cost $30USD per hour long massage. Was nice to go to a few times while I was down. We went to the pink tent and they were really good. The chairs around the pool when we went often had bird poop on them, and I heard some complains about overall cleanliness in and around the chairs around the pools which were valid. When I was there I only saw them stack and clean them twice during my two weeks. All pools are 4ft deep except the swim up bar and kids area. Kids splash park was mostly vacant and all of the kids mostly stayed in the main entertainment pool all day instead.

Riu Jalisco was a great hotel. We loved walking the beach! The buffet breakfast was terrific. Our rooms were well appointed and comfortable. It was disappointing that we had to pay for use of umbrellas each day at the beach. The a la cartes were glorified buffets. Food was good, but overall not much personal service was offered at meal times. Lines at the pool bar were sometimes very long. Use the sports bar close by, it served the best drinks at the resort. Overall we had a great holiday.

“A little too family friendly”

If you’re hoping for a quiet vacation, I would not recommend. I’ve been to family friendly resorts before, but there are children literally everywhere. You want to sit in the pool loungers and read? If you’re hoping for a quiet vacation, I would not recommend. I’ve been to family friendly resorts before, but there are children literally everywhere. You want to sit in the pool loungers and read? Think again. You want to escape the kids and go to the adult pool? Have fun being in water where drunk adults have been spilling drinks & sitting all day without getting up once to use the washroom. Go to the beach for some quiet? There isn’t an ounce of shade. Very family friendly, but would not recommend to adults looking for a quiet & relaxing vacation. The rooms and food are good though.
