Its an unusual combination of kitsch and charming, but overall rather pleasant. We reached quite late at night, and we spoke no Russian and the hotel staff no English, but they had everything, including room allocations, breakfast timings written down for us….much much appreciated! Our large group had a total of 8 rooms, 5 in the main wing and 3 in the banya annexe. The rooms in the main wing are excellent, the ones in the banya are not as nice, especially the one which didn't have air-conditioning! So I would advise guests to take a look at the room before checking in, especially in warmer weather. This Hotel is about 10 minutes drive from the main town, which was fine for us, as we wanted a quite location. It was perfect for long walks, visiting the monastery and the cute museum opposite. Its also convenient as the hotel can easily call for taxis, so we much preferred staying here rather than the Sovietesque hotels closer to town. The breakfast and lunch at the restaurant was excellent too. Overall a great stay with some lovely memories!

Veliky Novgorod is located roughly 200km south-east of St. Petersburg and can be easily reached in 3-3.5 hours drive. For those who would like to stay not always in city hotels, this could be a real alternative. Situated 5km outside of Novgorod, surrounded by pure nature, opposite Vitoslavlitsy, the unique wooden architecture museum and 10 minutes walk to St. George monastery, at the embankment of the Ilmen lake. The hotel features everything you need for a 2 nights stay, comfortable beds, free and good Wi-Fi, minibar, guest amenities, outside terrace, children playground, sauna, private parking behind the hotel and a lot of nature around. The restaurant is popular not only among hotel guests, but is also frequently booked by tour operators and local people for anniversaries/birthdays/weddings, so better book your table for dinner in advance! The kitchen is of Russian flavor, very authentic and delicious dishes. On the breakfast buffet you can find a good assortment of national dishes like Blinis, Mors, Curd Cheese (творог), greens, salads and international items like Muesli, Cornflakes, sausage, eggs and cheese...open from 7 until 11am, so enough time for late risers. Opposite of the reception desk is also a spacious seating area with arm-chairs and a TV, where you can spend your time while it is raining outside or for children to play. Otherwise there are some benches in front of the hotel entrance in a garden park where you can roast in the sun and just relax.

This is a delightful little resort outside of town that I recommend if you want something a little more rustic and folksy. It is a 20-minute bus ride from town, and the buses are reasonably frequent. The common areas are done up to resemble dacha interiors - a bit dusty and worn here and there, but lots of cute touches. There is a big wrap-around lawn for the kids to run around, a ping-pong table and a toddler playground. There is also a charming bath house, but it is more geared to groups. The restaurant was very good for dinner. The breakfast buffet was good, with an omlette station, but there was no toaster. The hotel is just across the street from one of the main attractions of V. Novgorod, the open air museum of a model village (though it was mostly under construction when we were there), and just down the road from a beautiful monastery. Our room was comfortable for two adults and a child, but an adult may have found the sofa uncomfortable. The staff at the reception were very nice and helpful.
