“Fair accommodation, though a bit disappointing”

After I had stayed in this B&B with my family back in August 2005, remembering it as a positive experience, I returned with my partner and another couple of friends for another stay of 4 nights in September 2011. Unfortunately, all four of us - staying in two ensuite double rooms - felt a bit disappointed this time around. It's not that it was bad, and it's not that we didn't enjoy our stay at all - but we have seen better (e.g. all of the other hotels/B&Bs we stayed during our last 6-week trip around Europe). I'll start with the good part: it is a lovely house with clean rooms, breakfast is generous and tasty, prepared fresh according to your requests, and of good quality. You can definitely get a good night sleep, and the owner is extremely friendly (perhaps a bit too much at times). The bad: first and foremost, we had a lot of trouble with the hot water running out, in both of our rooms. The owner seemed genuinely concerned about our problem, but apparently didn't really know how to fix it for us. We tried to manage with short showers from that point onwards. Other than that, there was an unpleasant smell of cigarette smoke in the hallway outside our rooms, and there was no internet connection of any kind. The balcony outside our rooms seemed rather unmaintained and dirty, unlike the rooms themselves. Communication: the owner doesn't speak English; I speak some German so we managed to understand each other. Email communication was with her daughter who does speak English, but unfortunately replies were rather slow (and some of my emails received no reply at all). The house is located in a small village very close to Bled (takes about 5 minutes by car), but we had some difficulty navigating to the house for the first time when we arrived at night. Make sure you ask for exact directions if you stay there. As to our recommendation: it's not "avoid at all costs", but if we ever return to Bled, I think we will prefer to look for some other accommodation.
