We so loved our stay in Wengen that we now jokingly refer to it as “our Swiss home.” Our lodging at the Hotel Falken definitely played a role in that assessment. While located “close to the train station,” please note that it’s a significant uphill walk on a paved and sloped path to get there, with the final plateau toward reception being gravel. We arrived about an hour before official 3 PM check-in and were lucky to be shown to our room about 20 minutes later, after enjoying a “welcome drink” of crisp apple juice in the lobby. Thank you for your hospitality, Victoria! By European standards, our corner room at the end of the second floor was GIGANTIC, featuring windows on both walls and a terrace with a gorgeous view of the region. Furnishings included a chaise lounge in the corner, a table with two chairs, a large wardrobe, a dresser and nightstands by both beds. There was also a foyer with hooks for coats and a bench where we changed and stored our shoes. The bathroom was also large, with a garden tub. The included breakfast offered a beautiful array of breads, cheeses, yogurts, cereals, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, mixed fruit and whole pieces of fruit; also scrambled eggs and vegetarian baked beans. Apple and orange juice, water and milk were available self-serve, as well as a variety of teas. Guests could order coffee from the delightful service staff, including cappuccino and the decadent cafe au lait that I asked for each of our three days. Each morning, our room number was placed on a table for assigned seating. Insider tip: we asked to be seated on the windowed terrace for the final day and gleefully found our spot out there. I suggest asking for this at check-in. The reception, housekeeping and breakfast buffet staff (who also served the hotel’s fixed price 4-course dinner each night) were all super friendly, cheerful and helpful. Three cons with the room: the bed linens featured pillows that were terribly flat and duvets where all the feathery stuffing kept sliding to the side or bottom. The shower tub bottom was quite slick and the temperature of the water was inconsistent. The antiquated room key took some getting used to - especially when locking from the inside. One charming aspect of our room: a flock of sheep grazed not far from our end of the hotel. We weren’t prepared for their bells to keep ringing through the night, which pestered our first night of sleep, but eventually we got used to it and found it a pleasant soundtrack to our stay. Don’t miss a star sighting of the “hotel dog,” Charlie the Samoyed, who is featured in a children’s book that is sold locally.

We arrived at Wengen train station. Luckily we were traveling with a wheelie carryon and backpack each because be prepared to hoof it up the road to the hotel that is perched on one of the hills of Wengen. We were greeted with ice cold apple juice to sip in the parlor while we completed our registry. We slept with the windows wide opened and were lulled to sleep by the sheep bells and church bells and then we greeted a new day dawning with the morning sun and more bells. If you are used to a king bed as we are - the bed is small- but my husband did not fall out during the night. The shower was a welcome after a day of exploring. The included breakfast is the typical buffet. We could live on bread, cheese, and coffee!

We absolutely loved our stay at Hotel Falken! It is truly like stepping back in time. Although some might say it is dated, that was part of the charm in my families opinion. It was like stepping back in time. The mountain views from the balcony and every window in our room were absolutely breathtaking. The customer service from every employee was excellent. We highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for an authentic Swiss Alps experience!
