Wooden flooring and walls are not well insulated from voices and you may hear your neighbours talking next door. The food serving area located next to the reception is mini buffet style where you make your own coffee and tea just like your own house.

We were lucky to find a room at all that day. As it was the last free room in the hotel it was the smallest one on the top floor. As this place is listed in the Unesco World heritage list there is of course no elevator. However we enjoyed the beautiful sight from the five windows of this tiny room… more

As this place is listed in the Unesco World heritage list there is of course no elevator. However we enjoyed the beautiful sight from the five windows of this tiny room. We also enjoyed a good dinner and breakfast in the charming atmosphere of the garden.

Don't expect your regular hotel here. These mansions are officially listed in the Unesco World Heritage list so there are no elevators; the wooden mansions/structures (there seem to be more than one, because our group of 8 were separated into several different structures), dating back to 13th century, seem to be built on the side of a hill. There was quite a climb to get to the hotel so this would not be recommended for the movement challenged. However, our luggage (which we were instructed to leave at the bottom of the hill) were magically waiting for us at our door on the 2nd floor of the main building after we checked in. There are no women service staff that we saw and the male service people we saw, although unsmiling were all accommodating, efficient and willing to please. However, the bathrooms were thoroughly modern with telephone showers, running hot and cold water; good wifi connections in all the rooms as well so all the modern conveniences while being steeped in history. There were two of us and we were happily surprised to find three generous single beds in our room with a radiator nicely warming the room for our comfort. The beds may sag just the teeniest bit but did not cause any discomfort. A miniscule lobby just off the kitchen. The lobby also doubles as the buffet area for cold breakfast buffet and leads into the dining room. Set dinner for the group was amazingly good - a chicken snitzel with greens baked with cheese in paper thin phyllo pastry with salad greens on the side. The hotel is quite convenient for what the little town has to offer. Where the bus let us off, there were several little stores for food (including fresh fruit), souvenirs, even a vending machine for soda and snacks. On the other side of the hill is the Kaymakamlar museum (a typical Ottoman style dwelling of the wealthy). Continue up the hill to the Hidirlik Parki (park) with beautiful panoramic views of Safranbolu. In my opinion, a "must try" experience if seeing something different is your goal.
