Firstly, although this hotel is called 'Colchester', it is actually about a ten minute drive from the centre at Eight Ash Green. However, it has good road links and, as a bonus, is quieter and features a leisure club. It has a relaxed, homely, casual vibe. We stayed for one night in a twin room, which was spacious and clean. It was comfortable with a good shower and everything you need for a short stay but rather dated in design and decor and a little tatty in places. Otherwise, it was comfortable with nice bedding. Our only real issue was with the heating – another sign that the hotel needs updating: there is air-conditioning on a modern system but a radiator for warmth. When we arrived, the room was cold and the radiator off. We turned it on and went to dinner. When we returned, it had barely got warm and the room felt no different. It also did nothing for the temperature of the bathroom, making for a chilly start and end to showering. It also made a continuous noise, not unlike a kettle boiling. We're used to sleeping with ear plugs but, without, it would have been intrusive and troublesome. We had been travelling all day and the restaurant was convenient for supper. The setting is 'barn style' and informal. The menu was limited but there were gluten free choices (yay!) and our food decidedly tasty. I had a fish pie that was home-made style rather than mass-produced in appearance and it was hot and tasty. My husband had the steak pie with rosemary gravy in a little jug. He's something of a pie aficionado and not slow to criticise but he pronounced it excellent. He also isn't a fan of gravy but used the whole jug and pronounced it the best he'd ever had. Food is a personal issue but this is high praise. The staff in the restaurant were incredibly friendly. Breakfast the next morning was a little unadventurous but all the usuals were there and we could order freshly made porridge and poached eggs, both of which were fine. There's no denying this hotel is overdue an update but the service, the food in the restaurant and the friendliness needed no improvement.

This stay at Holiday Inn Colchester was fully in line with the reliable standards I have come to expect from IHG. Arrival & Check-In • The hotel was easy to find using sat nav and postcode, making for a smooth and stress-free arrival. • Parking was straightforward, with a large car park available to both the front and rear of the hotel. • Check-in was quick, warm, and efficient. Debbie on reception made an excellent first impression and is a real credit to the hotel. • As a Priority Club member, I was warmly acknowledged and offered a choice of bonus points, a free drink, or a complimentary breakfast — a small gesture, but one that is always appreciated. Room & Cleanliness • My room was spotlessly clean, well presented, and in very good condition, fully in keeping with expected IHG standards. • Fixtures, fittings, and linen were all fresh, tidy, and well maintained. • Overall, the room felt comfortable, cared for, and ready for a relaxing overnight stay. Dining • Evening meal: The menu offered the familiar Holiday Inn selection of pizzas, burgers, pies, fries, and similar favourites, providing enough variety to suit most guests. The open-plan dining area created a relaxed and informal atmosphere. On this occasion, I chose the fish pie, which was excellent and thoroughly enjoyable. • Breakfast: Breakfast offered a good mix of continental and cooked options. I particularly liked the fact that omelettes, poached eggs, and boiled eggs were available freshly prepared, which adds a nice touch of flexibility and freshness. Check-Out • Check-out was smooth and efficient, with polite and professional staff ensuring everything was completed quickly and without fuss. Overall • A comfortable, clean, and well-run hotel that delivered the dependable IHG experience I have come to expect over many years of staying with the brand. • This was a solid and enjoyable stay, and I would be very happy to return at any time. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
