“The 'Magic' is Still There!”

My wife and I first visited this hotel, it's beautiful grounds and fabulous location a couple of years ago. Recently decided to return for a few nights break, and so glad we did. A trip back in time to WW2, the Dambusters, steeped in RAF memorabilia, the Petwood Hotel is a magical place to stay. Along with friendly staff, great food and woodland walks, we've just returned, totally refreshed.

“Little niggles that can be improved.”

This is a magnificent, sprawling, hotel complex set in beautifully landscaped grounds and has a mock Tudor/Elizabethan feel to its architecture. We were in Wisteria, described as a ‘garden room’, but while we were not expecting to see large herds of wildebeest or the hanging gardens of Babylon, it was difficult to admire the garden surroundings from a sedentary position due to the high window. Check in was a little underwhelming too. It was a special occasion for our party, and a little more enthusiasm might have been appropriate. (In the morning eye contact was made with reception staff on several occasions, but no smiles or greetings were forthcoming.) I was also surprised to be asked to pay on our arrival. On checking I see that this is in the hotel’s T&Cs, but it still felt a little inappropriate for such a high-class establishment. The lift could not unfortunately accommodate all four of us and could only take three at a time. Our room had the name Wisteria, but not the number 210, on the key tag. (This led to complications at check in for breakfast in the morning, since the member of staff could not see Wisteria on his list. Why not just have Wisteria 210 on the tag?) The room was large and spotlessly clean (bar the pull out shelf in the desk) but lacked a set of drawers for storing small items. The step up to the shower over the bath looked a bit of an adventure, but the grab rail helped, and I have to say the shower was excellent. We ate in the Terrace Bar in the evening, and the food was really good and enjoyed by us all. The two members of staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel is steeped in history, and we were able to freely access the Squadron Bar to see all the memorabilia on display. Absolutely fascinating and a big bonus for those of us who have an interest in the period. Breakfast in the morning was a bit of a disappointment. The continental option was good, but the hot food in the Squadron Bar was less than appetising. We had to wait some time for bacon and eggs to be provided since they had run out. The bacon and eggs were overcooked, and the sausage was particularly poor. A member of staff explained that it was due to too many people turning up at the same time. Surely a hotel of this standing should have experience of this. Overall, we did not let these small niggles spoil our experience at the Petwood. These are little things that can be improved, and it would not put us off recommending the hotel to others or returning in the future. We wish the hotel well in their endeavours.
