A brilliant hostel with absolutely amazing staff, especially Pat as stated in other reviews. It's really excellent value by York standards, especially considering it's in a convenient location, and offers a range of high-quality shared dorms and private rooms as well as some really nice communal areas like a bar, a cozy living room and a garden. It always has a safe, relaxed and friendly feel; it offers great chances to interact with a really interesting mix of guests from around the world, but at the same time if you'd rather keep yourself to yourself that's not a problem. As mentioned what really makes it though is the staff, especially Pat. The two times I've visited he went absolutely above and beyond to help us and make us feel welcome at all hours. He's a large part of the reason why the hostel has such a great atmosphere, and as someone who works in customer service myself he's a real inspiration. On a personal level he's a fascinating guy to talk to as well. All in all a really wonderful experience from start to finish, we'll definitely be back.

As a self-professed Digital Hobo who has stayed at countless hostels across the UK over the past seven years, I can confidently say that the Astor York stands head and shoulders above the rest. This isn't just another hostel – it has become my sanctuary in both good times and bad. What sets Astor York apart is its remarkable ability to create genuine community. The staff aren't just employees; they're the heart and soul of the place. Louise, Ash, Patrick, and Sebastian particularly shine, but every staff member contributes to the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes this hostel special. Their authentic care for guests transforms what could be just another temporary stay into something that feels like coming home. The facilities themselves are impeccable. The rooms and common areas are consistently well-maintained and clean, setting a high standard that many other hostels struggle to match. But it's not just about the physical space—it's about what happens within these walls. As a displaced Canadian who was forced to make England my unexpected home, I have found myself returning to Astor York more than any other hostel. During life's inevitable ups and downs, this place has been my constant. When I've needed familiarity or community, Astor York has always delivered. The sense of belonging here is palpable—whether you're staying for a night or returning for your tenth visit, you're treated like part of the Astor family. The Astor chain has consistently impressed me across all their locations, but their York property stands out as their crown jewel. It is more than just a place to stay; it is a testament to how a hostel can create a true community that ultimately spans the globe, offering both a comfortable rest stop for travellers and a reliable haven for those who need it most.
