Oh wow what a wonderful hotel and staff! The location is simply stunning. Right next to the River & Abbey ruins. Lovely walks nearby to historical places & woodlands as well. The staff are unbelievably friendly, helpful & actually really went over & above for me in many ways. Firstly when I unknowingly left a bag which they contacted me about & were going to post it back to me. Then ironically my car broke down & had to go back for another unexpected night so I got the bag anyway. I can’t thank them enough for all the little things they did during what was a very stressful time. Including a lift to collect my hire car as the company wouldn’t deliver to the hotel. The food is really great too. I can’t wait to go back will definitely be there again this year! Leanne

“Relaxing stay”

First time at this lovely place certainly won't be our last the place has such a relaxing atmosphere from when you first arrive, the staff all of them were so nice and friendly the food was lovely I can't wait to go back ..our room was lovely and peaceful,,great place

“Lovely stay, lots of positives, but ….”

Stayed here mid week for two nights on a B&B basis. We were on the first floor facing the Abbey in room 108. The hotel itself is very impressive, especially the downstairs with some beautiful views. Stayed here mid week for two nights on a B&B basis. We were on the first floor facing the Abbey in room 108. The hotel itself is very impressive, especially the downstairs with some beautiful views. Lots of parking outside. Breakfast was fine with plenty of choices and staff were more than happy to help. We also ate dinner at the restaurant which was lovely, can’t fault the meal (all 3 courses) or the service. Our room was clean and warm with Furniture that was in keeping with the hotel, not modern, but fit for purpose. The bed was really comfortable, and I am ultra fussy when it comes to beds. They had tea and coffee making facilities, although a bit mean with one little packet of biscuits, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, TV on the wall. We could also hear people walking/stomping around upstairs in the room above and so the soundproofing wasn’t great either! Lots of condensation on the windows, presume it being a listed building and what they can do and it being expensive? The bathroom however, I was in need of some attention, the wallpaper on the ceiling?? Was coming away, not sure why anyone would put wallpaper on the ceiling, again lots of condensation on the window, the sink was ultra modern and was at a height that if you were of a short stature, i.e. maybe 5 foot three and under you would have to get on a stall to wash your hands properly, I’m 5ft 5 and the sink came to my breastbone, a real design flaw. Also, the shower power wasn’t great. Of note, you have to tell them at reception if you want to have your room cleaned, they don’t have those notices that you put on the front of your door, so be aware of this. One little comment, as we decided not to have our room cleaned, the young girl who was on reception, we asked if we could have some more tea and another little packet of biscuits as we would presume this would be replenished, had we had our room cleaned, she wasn’t very chivalrous and it felt like we were asking for her right arm! Not great customer service All in all, we had a lovely day and were definitely return if we were in the area.

“A deep clean required.”

First of all I would just like to say that this hotel has a magnificent setting. A beautiful spot right on the Tweed and next to the Abbey, a beautiful looking building. First of all I would just like to say that this hotel has a magnificent setting. A beautiful spot right on the Tweed and next to the Abbey, a beautiful looking building. Upon entering the hotel we were greeted by a lovely friendly lady whom gave us our key, directions to the room and dining times. We were in a ground floor standard room at the back of the hotel with no clear sight out and so was very dark, also a very small room, with no room for our bags. We had a holdall and a rucksack each so had be careful where these were placed so as not to fall over them in the dark. Upon entering the bathroom for the first time I noticed that the soap on the sink had been unwrapped and used along with a hand towel which was left on the towel rail along with clean ones. The soap was actually stuck to the sink so had been there long enough to dry out. I went straight to reception and informed her of this. I also asked if we could possibly be moved. Unfortunately the hotel was apparently fully booked and so this was not possible. We were provided with a new soap and a clean towel, along with an apology. Upon taking a bath that evening I noticed a lot of black soap build up under the taps which didn’t fill me with confidence in the cleanliness of the suite. The bath itself was grimy and rough to the touch so I knew this hadn’t been properly cleaned for some time, especially as I could rub it off to a smooth feel with my hand. At breakfast we asked for coffee. As I poured it I noticed that it was full of grinds as it came out, and then also became aware that it was stone cold. We had been given an old pot of coffee. It took a while to get the attention of a member of staff and a fresh pot. I didn’t mention the bathroom issues to the male reception staff member as we left as he may not have been made aware of the soap and towel issue we had the afternoon before, also there was a cleaner vacuuming around us at check out and felt too uncomfortable to bring these issues up within earshot of her. We had booked and paid for this accommodation last year so was hoping for a reasonable Standard room but unfortunately this was not the case. The staff that we had contact with were all very friendly. The location of the hotel was perfect. I understand that old buildings can be expensive and difficult to maintain so I would always allow for this, but I feel there will never be a good enough excuse for poor standards of cleanliness no matter how old a property and its furnishings are. Maybe the staff need to be given more time to clean a room, or to have more staff?
