Ksar Ghilane - Guermessa - Chenini - Ksar Ouled Soltane - Ksar Hadada - Tataouine

Day 5: Breakfast. Early morning departure to take some photos of the sunrise in the dunes. Onward to the land of ksars and dinosaurs. A fantastic journey that will take us to El Dahar, a spectacular lunar landscape where erosion along the Tertiary and Quaternary rock systems has created a landscape that in some places is very similar to the planet Mars. It's no surprise that the region was chosen as the setting for the planet Tatooine in Star Wars. Erosion, over several million years, has given rise to ravines, valleys and basins, where the winds of the Sahara have deposited a clayey sand. This sand, accumulated in the valleys, has created these red and ochre tones that give the region its unique landscape. First stops will be Guermessa and Chenini. These villages were built atop the mountains in the form of a fortified citadel for locals to protect their food and their families. Onward to Ksar Ouled Soltane, the largest and best preserved ksar in the Tataouine region with more than four hundred ghorfas. Lunch. In the afternoon, we'll continue on to Ksar Hadada, an ancient Berber ksar made up of ghorfas where shepherds used to keep their crops. Dinner and overnight stay.

We'll end our exploration of the Amazigh universe in Matmata, famous for its underground homes, and where a minority of locals still live. Important remarks

  • Tunisia is a Muslim country and the month of Ramadan is of major significance to its residents. During Ramadan, entertainment and alcohol will be restricted in most of the country. The sale of alcohol will be restricted in many places, although some establishments will offer alcohol for sale to tourists. During this period, local businesses may also have shorter opening hours.
  • The tours include cultural stops at local workshops so you can learn about the production of traditional crafts.
  • Triple rooms in Africa are generally rooms with twin beds or a double, in which a folding bed is installed to accommodate the third person. Due to the inconvenience this causes, we advise against using this option as far the possible.
  • Check-in time at the hotel on the day of arrival depends on each establishment, but in no case will it be before 3:00 p.m., unless otherwise indicated.
  • Accommodation will be either be in Hammamet, Sousse, Kairouan or Tunis, depending on hotel availability.
  • For outings with less than 4 people, the tour will be by private car combined with 4x4.
  • In periods of high demand, the tour might follow a different order than the one described in the itinerary, but this won't affect the content of the visits.
  • In periods of high demand, due to lack of hotel availability, overnight stays might be in a different city than the one described in the itinerary, as long as it's on the planned route.
  • Some sections of the itinerary include overnight stays at basic properties. In these cases, the rustic feel of the facilities is offset by the immersive experience of local culture.
  • The order of the itinerary may be altered for logistical reasons, without prior notice, but no scheduled trips will be cancelled (except in the case that adverse weather conditions prevent its realisation).
  • A credit card is considered a guarantee, so sometimes you will need one for check-in at hotels.
  • Prices are calculated based on admission fees to the sights as of the date of publication. If there is an increase in these prices, you will be promptly informed.
  • If you are a person with reduced mobility, please contact us to confirm the suitability of the trip.
  • Consult the necessary documentation to enter the destinations visited and for transit in the countries where air stopovers are made.
