Also known as South Seymour, Baltra is a small flat island located near the center of the Galápagos. It was created by geological uplift. The island is very arid and vegetation consists of salt bushes, prickly pear cactus and palo santo trees. Baltra is currently not within the boundaries of the Galapagos National Park. The Galapagos Land Iguana is the subject of an active re-introduction campaign on the island; it became extinct on Baltra in 1954.
Punta Suarez is located on the west coast of the Island Espanola, the eldest ISland of the Archipelago of Galapagos, and is aproximately 5 million years old. It is one of the most attractive places and most popular of the Galapagos. In Punta Suarez you can observe a species of iguanas, green and red, endemic of the Espanola Island. Also, it is the only place in the world where the albatros have their nests.
Is one of the islands with the most interesting history of mankind and one of the first to be inhabited. Flamingos and turtles (from december to may) can be seen in the island. The Galapagos petrel can be found here, a species that remains most part of it's life far away from the land.
Floreana Island was the first inhabited island and has an exciting human history. It includes the mysterious deaths of several inhabitants that have never been solved. There are fresh water wells as this area was used by the early settlers who found refuge in the caves nearby. It is also home to the endemic medium tree finch that only exists on this island. Pink flamingos and green sea turtles nest on this island (December to May). The Galapagos storm petrel is also found here, a sea bird that spends most of its life away from land. At Post Office Bay, since the 18th century whalers kept a wooden barrel that served as post office so that mail could be picked up and delivered to their destination. Tourists can leave their post cards in the barrel and take any addressed to someone in their home towns back home to pass on.
Urbina Bay is located at the base of Alcedo Volcano on the west coast, between Tagus Cove and Elizabeth Bay. This area experienced a major uplift in 1954, causing the land to rise over 16 feet. The coast expanded half a mile out, leaving marine life stranded on the new shore. This area is also a great place for snorkeling. Highlights: Land iguanas (the biggest in Galapagos), hawks, coral reef, giant tortoises; snorkeling: turtles, rays, tropical fish. Activities: Snorkeling, dinghy ride & hike, 2 trails: short 0.6mi, long 1.9mi
Punta Espinoza is located in the Island of Fernandina, the youngest of the Galapagos Archipelago and the most volcanic. It has a mixture of aridity with green wild life. As it has no mammals, Fernandina has a unique enviroment with the highest density of marine iguanas, sea lions that share their habitat with crabs and falcons.
On the northeast extreme of the Island of Isabella we find Punta Vicente Roca, an amazing area that offers a beautiful landscape of cliffd, thousands of native birds and generous marine life.
Daphne Major is a volcanic island just north of Santa Cruz Island and just west of the Baltra Airport in the archipelago Colon, commonly known as the Galápagos Islands. It consists of a tuff crater, devoid of trees.
Though easily accessible to most visitors to the Galápagos, the national park service has highly restricted visits to this island, and it is primarily used for scientific research. An intensive study of Darwin's finches was conducted here by biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant over a period of 20 years. They examined the behaviour and life cycles of finches, with the results strongly supporting Darwin's theory of evolution. Their efforts were documented in the Pulitzer Prize winning book The Beak of the Finch.
Daphne is home to a variety of other birds including Galápagos Martins, Blue-footed Booby, Nazca Booby, Short-eared Owls, Red-billed Tropicbirds and Magnificent Frigatebirds.
Cerro Dragon on the northeast coast of the Island of Santa Cruz, has two lagoons where flamigos and land iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus) can be seen. The vegetation includes Palo Santo trees and Optunia Cactus.
It is a city in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. Located in the Island of Santa Cruz it has the most advanced facilities of the archipelago. puerto Ayora has a privileged location, through the shores of the Bay. During the mayor part of the year, it has a fresh breeze that gives the city a warm temperature (december to may), and it makes Puerto Ayora in the Island of Santa Cruz a tropical paradise. The bay is a good place to observe pelicans, marine iguanas, herons, sea lions, and a large number of blue-footed boobies.
