We had a fantastic stay at Los Lagos Hotel. The pools are the standout feature, with multiple warm and hot spring pools, a great swim-up bar, and cooler pools with waterslides that our children loved. Breakfast is an excellent buffet with plenty of continental and local options, plus freshly cooked eggs made to order. Lunch and dinner were good, although we felt the food and drink prices throughout the hotel were a little expensive. Our Deluxe Room was spacious, modern and well presented, with a lovely balcony. I noticed some reviews mention dated rooms, but I think this depends on the room category. The higher-end rooms appear to be located further up the hillside and benefit from better views. Our room was near the top of the hill, but this wasn’t an issue as the complimentary shuttle was always available and quickly took us to and from reception. I walked it once, but with children the shuttle was much more convenient. The views of Arenal Volcano from the hotel are spectacular—if you’re lucky enough to catch it without cloud cover! Overall, I would definitely recommend Los Lagos. It strikes an excellent balance between the more budget-friendly options and the luxury resorts, offering outstanding facilities and great value without the premium price tag.

Fantastic stay. The amenities and room were well appointed, very clean and quiet. Our room was ground floor and very large; family of 4 stayed in one room comfortably on the 1st floor. Pools were great and the outdoor walking trail was very nice. Food at poolside bar was very good and drinks were great as well. Breakfast was very good, but dinner in the same restaurant was just OK. We ate most dinners in town at several local establishments and all of them were very good and close by. Nice hotels/resorts in this area are pricey and this one was in line with most hotels with similar amenities. Bottom line: I would stay here again.

Here’s a polished version that keeps the criticism clear but fair: We stayed for two nights. The location and surrounding nature are beautiful, but overall the property felt highly touristic, dated, and in need of significant renovation. Our standard room was very old and quite run-down. The main positives were the shower, which had excellent water pressure, and the additional fold-out bed, which was comfortable and practical. The restaurant atmosphere unfortunately felt more like a large factory canteen than a hotel restaurant. The food was average and, in our view, expensive for the quality offered. Staff were friendly at times, although the overall service experience was somewhat inconsistent. On the positive side, the Mirador outpost is worth visiting, and the shuttle bus service within the extensive hotel grounds worked very well and was convenient. The natural surroundings and location remain the strongest aspects of the property. However, considering the dated infrastructure, room quality, restaurant experience, and pricing, we believe there are better accommodation options in the area.
