This hotel was unlike any hotel I have stayed in the past. There are so many positives. Nothing is all good. I was allowed to check in early which was wonderful. Staff was welcoming on arrival. I booked through hotels.com. I was asked about my welcome drink and massage discount. I don't know if this was a mistake on the booking website. Never had this happen before. There isn't an elevator on the second floor. The rooms use traditional keys. The safe uses a key too. The room is spacious with a nice balcony. There is a refrigerator and a small coffee maker. The wifi in the room is spooky. It usually works on the balcony. There is a nice trail at the hotel. There is a nice pool and spa. The breakfast opens at 7 am. Some activities pick you up by 7. The breakfast has a lot of choices. There is an omelette bar. For the most part, I didn't really like the breakfast. It's about a 10 minute walk to other stores or restaurants. It isn't far but there isn't a sidewalk. I didn't care for the food in the restaurant ( it's usually empty). Plan accordingly. The bed is comfortable. You are surrounded by beautiful nature. You wake up to chirping. It is serene. The housekeepers make animals out of your towels. I have only seen that on cruises. That was a plus. The front desk will help you with tours. I had a tour I booked cancel last minute. They called and got me set up for another tour. This hotel is really unlike any hotel I have ever stayed in. I am glad I came. No place is perfect.

“Great overall experience near Fortuna”

Nice overall experience at Casa Luna. A little outside of the town of Fortuna, so has a true "jungle" feeling, with lots of birdsong around. The rooms were comfortable and clean. Nice overall experience at Casa Luna. A little outside of the town of Fortuna, so has a true "jungle" feeling, with lots of birdsong around. The rooms were comfortable and clean. I ding the hotel slightly as the quality of the breakfast was noticeably worse than other hotels in Costa Rica. Not that this is a dealbreaker, but the hotel also has very weak Wifi which just doesn't work in the rooms.

The Casa Luna is a confusing hotel. The room we were given was up a flight of stairs in a block with three other rooms, close to the pool and set in nice gardens. As we weren’t offered any porterage, you had to sort that out so if you have mobility issues or trouble carrying things that may be an issue. Check in was quick and very efficient. On entering the room, the positives were obvious, the room was huge, with two double beds which were very comfortable, a view of the volcano (sadly covered in mist for our stay) with a nice balcony to sit out on, very good air conditioning, strong Wi-Fi, a safe, an adjoining bathroom with a good shower. An umbrella in the room comes in very handy in La Fortuna, it can be very wet. The downsides of the room were also obvious as soon as we arrived and were quite bizarre. Although there was acres of space in the room it meant that the room felt a bit bleak and soulless and echoed a lot. With a tile floor throughout, it was like they initially designed the rooms to be small holiday apartments that were going to have a kitchen area, but they changed their minds and just had huge rooms with little in them. The design of the bathroom was a mess. There was an outer door, sink area and luggage storage and shower, then the toilet that had a door frame but no door, with the wardrobe and safe opposite. This was really awkward if two of you were trying to get ready at the same time or if you wanted to get something at the same time as someone was going to the bathroom. It was a totally impractical design and with so much space in the bedroom there was no problem with the wardrobe being in the bedroom. There was a minibar, but the prices were high. Soundproofing is an issue in the rooms, we could hear neighbours next door talking and coughing and they were not being loud, but it was like they were in the same apartment as us. The TV, which only had local channels, was lamentable in terms of its quality. We had dinner in the hotel one night as the Casa Luna is a short taxi ride out of La Fortuna, and we arrived late. The service and the meal were very good, although the menu is a little on the expensive side. The open-air setting of the restaurant is nice, breakfast is served there as well. Breakfast is good, a buffet of cereal, hot food, pastries, toast, fruit and eggs made to order. Reception will happily call you a cab if you want one and also organise tours if you want to do something else. I’m surprised that the hotel doesn’t offer a shuttle bus into town, they would make a fortune if they charged less than the taxis. It costs about $7/£5 for a single trip one way. Along with the room design, it’s a mystery as to why this is the case. The Casa Luna is a nice place in a good setting, but a few tweaks would make it even better.
