Hotel Poco à Poco is a very small stunning boutique hotel in Monteverde not far from the cloud forest. We stayed here as a family of 6, myself, husband, our daughters (14 and 11) and my parents as part of a tour of Costa Rica. From the moment we arrived we fell in love with the hotel and the grounds. The rooms were lovely, the toiletry products were high quality and smelled divine, and the girls were big fans of the robes. The hotel has a beautiful garden that you can walk around, we are all very much into nature and wildlife and spent a lot of our time in the gardens with our binoculars (and a cocktail). The bar service is a little slow at times but the drinks are good and the food was tasty too. There is a little shopping area a couple of minutes walk away with some good places to eat and drink. The hotel is a 10 minute drive to the cloud forest, which is a must do if you are visiting this area. The pool is lovely and partially covered, it’s small but very pretty and perfect for a quick dip. The only downside really is that we wished we had spent more nights here.

This place is magical! It’s got an incredible location close to lots of restaurants and shopping. The staff was so nice and accommodating. The restaurant on site is great and they do live music so check the schedule! Pedro at the poolside bar was the best. He not only made amazing drinks (best on our trip) but he also gave us recommendations for restaurants and things to do in Monteverde and at our next stop. Pedro is the man!!! The grounds here are gorgeous with awesome walking paths and animals everywhere. Come stay here for sure! PURA VIDA

We had a nice welcome to the Poco a Poco, the receptionist was very nice but as is increasingly happening with check ins at hotel around the world, despite the hotel having all your details, you have to fill out a form, scan a QR code and join a Whatapp group. We were told that the latter would alert us to when our room was ready (we were early), it didn’t and that was the last use we had for it. We did not get a welcome drink, others did. The staff at Reception and elsewhere in the hotel are very nice and many speak good English. Check out was easy and smooth. Reception is often busy and not 24 hours a day. We waited until our room was ready and had lunch in the Otocuma Restaurant which was very good, and Fiona’s service was excellent. Breakfast is also served here, it is an a la carte menu, I had the granola, omelette and huevos rancheros during our three-night stay and all were very good. Fruit, juice and coffee are also served. The room when we got into it was a mixed affair. The Wi-Fi was very good. There was a safe, a good bathroom with a decent shower and a TV with international channels, plus complimentary coffee. There is an umbrella in the room, we used it as one of the days we were there was a little showery. Housekeeping is excellent. There is an ice machine on site but no fridge/minibar in the room. However, these amenities were outweighed by the fact that there was no wardrobe in the room, despite there being ample space for one. There was a small cupboard with a rail in it under the TV (no hangers) and three drawers, but nowhere else to put clothes. This was incredibly inconvenient and inexplicable. The room was a little dark with a real smell of damp at times. Air conditioning was not inbuilt into the room, instead it was a free stranding unit which took up room and was frankly not very good, so the room was warm most of the time. Things that were advertised on the hotel website were not in evidence, there was no dressing gowns or radio. Our room was also behind the Otocuma Restaurant so occasionally we had the noise of service being performed and it reduced the amount of light in the room. The location of the Poco a Poco is good. It’s about a hilly ten minute walk to the main downtown area of Santa Elena and a 20 minute drive to the Cloud Forest Reserve. There is a strip mall across the street with good restaurants and cafes, gift shops, a pharmacy and a big supermarket. The grounds of the hotel are really good, there are extensive nature trails through the property, a kitchen garden that is used by the chef, lots of areas to sit and watch the extensive bird and animal life that visits the area. This was probably my favourite feature of the hotel. There is a small pool with a bar. Overall the advantages outnumber Poco a Poco’s downsides, but it could be easily be better, especially the room, with adequate ventilation/cooling and somewhere to hang your clothes.

A lovely hotel with extremely helpful and friendly staff. Our room #28 (for 3) was a great size, beds amazing and pillows to die for 😁 Bathroom was fabulous and the shower was stunning. Our only issue was that we didn’t have a dedicated outside space to sit, other than the communal areas. The food in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast was fabulous. Just ensure you have plenty of time as it’s served at a leisurely pace, but this gave us assurance that food was freshly prepared.
