We were lucky enough to stay for 6 nights very recently at El Remanso. We are a family of 4 from the UK and the children are teenagers (14 and 16). We realised after leaving that we had all developed quite an emotional attachment to El Remanso. There is only one other hotel that has ever made my family feel that way and that is in the mountains in Sweden and we now go there every year. If only it were as easy to get to Costa Rica from the UK! If you are thinking of travelling down to the Osa peninsula, do it (we have travelled around Costa Rica several times and nothing beats Osa for wildlife). If you are considering staying at El Remanso, book it. It's a very special place and you will not regret it. Also, treat yourself to an extra night longer than you think you will need as you will be so pleased that you did. The location is simply stunning. You are high up in the canopy so have the most privileged view of the Pacific ocean and the treetops and the scarlet macaws, toucans and mealy parrots flying all around you along with all four of Costa Rica's monkeys (spider, howler, squirrel and capuchin). They are everywhere playing in the trees and all around you and the howlers will wake you up nice and early in the morning. There are friendly coatis running around the lodge and you will see tree frogs, lizards and non-venomous vine snakes in the ponds at night by torchlight and very large bull frogs on the paths. On the lodge's forest trails you might see venomous snakes (the fer de lance - we saw 4) and sloths hanging in the trees and amazing insect life including tarantulas and scorpions. There is even a friendly anteater who seemingly visits the hotel on a daily basis to feed and play in the mango trees. We threw ourselves into El Remanso life and took part in the planned activities the hotel suggested for us every day including river walks, forest hikes, waterfall hikes, night hikes and the matapalo tour and we were also given the opportunity to release baby turtles into the pacific at night from the beach at the base of the lodge. We saw dolphins and a humpback whale and its calf on a boat trip in the golfo dulce and even went zip lining high up in the canopy which was really well organised, very safe and excellent fun. The accommodation is really beautiful, extremely comfortable and luxurious and the views are unbelievable. The pool is very warm and refreshing and very welcome with the humidity. The plunge pools on the balcony are also a very nice touch. The food is excellent and varied and the wine and cocktails were surprisingly good value. Our children loved the churros! Aside from the location and its amazing wildlife, it is the warmth and hospitality of the staff that makes this place exceptional. We were made to feel so very welcome and we were so well looked after by the team in particular Ashley, Rosa, Joshua (absolutely brilliant), Rinaldo, Bryan, Carol, Angie, JuanCarlos, Luis, Daniel, Lauren, Tony and Henry (who took us zip lining) and our amazing guide and friend, Edgar. A truly wonderful place we hope very much to return to one day. Thank you El Remanso for very special memories. We wish you all the very best. Hasta Pronto!

If we could give El Remanso more than five stars, we would. This was hands down the best hotel/lodge we’ve ever stayed at. We were enchanted from the first moment we arrived. The modern aesthetic smack dab in the middle of a tropical rainforest was unlike anything we have seen. Our Levanto villa was absolutely incredible. Waking up to the sounds of the jungle, watching wildlife from our plunge pool, and ending each evening surrounded by nature felt like a dream we didn’t want to wake up from. We saw toucans, all four species of monkeys, scarlet macaws, a sloth, agoutis, and coatis all on the property. Also, the beach is stunning and feels immensely secluded. One of the things we appreciated most was El Remanso’s authentic commitment to sustainability. They employ local staff, use renewable energy on the whole property (no electricity), have purified water on tap, and fresh, locally sourced and organic ingredients. Their wildlife and nature conservancy efforts are evident all around. The food deserves its own review. Every meal was exceptional. Fresh ceviche, creative cocktails, beautiful plant-forward dishes, and authentic Costa Rican ingredients.. it honestly felt like dining at a Michelin-quality restaurant every day. A special thank you to Edgar, Rosa, Ashley, Eli, Ronaldo, and Josh. Your kindness, warmth, and hospitality made our stay unforgettable. We were genuinely happy every time we saw you. You were on top of everything. And to everyone working behind the scenes-thank you for creating such a magical experience. Highly recommend the Matapalo wildlife tour because it feels like a safari through the Costa Rican rainforest. We did the night tour and were not impressed but we also understand that wildlife is unpredictable and based on timing and luck so if you do it, you might love it! If you’re considering how long to stay, we’d recommend at least four or five nights. We stayed three and weren’t ready to leave. Highly recommend staying here. We can’t wait to come back again!

El Remanso is an oasis deep in the wild rainforest of the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. This is not a place for the faint of heart. Places like El Remanso are designed for the bold and curious traveler who wants to go where others don't, who isn't afraid to dive deeper and who can see the beauty where others look away. El Remanso is an ideal base when you are ready to explore the wildest parts of the rainforest and you don't want to sacrifice too much comfort in the process. This was my 6th trip to the country and my second time visiting the Osa Peninsula. Before I booked with El Remanso I also researched the well-known neighbor property. Everything I found told me I would get as much or more of an experience at El Remanso for rates that were 30% to 50% less. I had friends that stayed at the other property many years ago and raved about it, but it has since been purchased by a corporate management company while El Remanso is family-owned and run. If you are looking to experience this part of Costa Rica, El Remanso has not only made it seamless, they've tamed it just enough that you can enjoy a few days immersed in a truly wild place while being able to feel completely safe and cared for, if not pampered. Summary: Accommodations: Very large and spotlessly clean rainforest villas, note that there is no A/C but the fans and natural breezes keep it comfortable, outdoor showers, get the plunge pool. Plenty of places to hang clothes. Good lighting, plenty of 110 outlets. I did not see the rooms, only bungalows and villas. Food: All-inclusive except alcohol, food was way above par for a remote location, tons of choices for plant-based eaters, coffee by 5am and snacks all day, ceviche is delicious, don't miss the churros and banana bread. Service: The service was overall excellent but often above-and-beyond. Attentive, friendly and personalized without being intrusive. A family-owned lodge! Excursions: A daily excursion is included. Due to the wild nature of the area, I recommend sticking to the guided tours and not trying to do it yourself (they do provide a map of some trails on the property but I was warned about going alone). I was given a private guide for my entire stay as the lodge was not totally full. They also surprised me with a specially curated tour that isn't typically offered and which went far longer than a typical tour - I was totally impressed and it was one of the best experiences of my trip. Wildlife: I am a bird photographer and my total count for 5 days at El Remando was over 100 species, 70% being new lifers for me. I also saw 2 tapirs, 3 anteaters, 2 tayras, wild boars, coatis, agoutis, all 4 species of monkeys and too many fer de lance :) Know before you go: El Remanso has a beach but it is not swimmable. The hike down just to take a look is worth it but it is a fitness challenge on the way back up. At minimum, hike as far as the lookout point Mirablau. They will make arrangements to take you to a swimmable beach just 15 minutes away on the gulf side if you want to swim. Bugs - I kept my sliding doors shut at all times and had very minimal problems with bugs or critters in my room. No A/C: The ceiling fans were sufficient for cooling things down enough to sleep at night. I actually used the thick blanket provided. Open-air but fully screened in rooms that are well-sealed means you get a faint sound of the ocean depending on location of your room and the sounds of the morning jungle wake you bright and early without dealing with mosquitos and other creepy-crawlies. Packing list: I recommend lightweight, quick-dry long pants. I wore capri hiking pants and my ankles are pretty torn up from bug bites. Same with tops - I wore tanks and my shoulders show the marks - I purchased the MozzieStyle shrug bug zip up and it was super effective, should have worn it more often. Closed toed shoes are a must - I recommend a pair of light hiking shoes (each room has it's own water faucet and scrub brush for cleaning them daily) and one pair of water shoes plus a lightweight pair of sneakers or sandals for coming/going to dinner when you don't want to put hiking shoes back on. Bring a small flashlight or battery powered headlamp. You are near the equator so it is full dark by 630 when you walk to dinner. Your cell phone flashlight is not ideal. Think ultra-minimal hot weather hiking - no makeup, no heels, no sundresses. After a long day in the rainforest, you will want a shower and something comfy to wear to dinner. You will look silly if you dress up. Tips: USD are fine for tips. Use AI to build yourself a chart in advance and plan to tip your guides daily. If you purchase alcohol at dinner, you will sign and have an option to leave tips. Otherwise they will give you a sheet at the end of your stay to allow you to tip by department. Puerto Jimenez: Your typical Costa Rica town, not geared toward tourists (shops and restaurants are more local) but close enough with groceries and a pharmacy if needed. Fly in, don't drive. I would like to say a special thank you to the El Remanso Family for hosting me and making my trip so special. There are many people I will remember from this trip: Shout out to Rinaldo for the high-level of personalized service and for giving the team the greenlight to go above and beyond with my surprise tour - I was blown away. We stayed at El Remanso with our family, and the experience was truly a 10/10 from beginning to end. Everything — absolutely everything — was perfect. The service was outstanding, the food was incredible, and our villa had everything we could possibly need. It was beautifully designed, full of character and style, and perfectly in harmony with the natural surroundings. The environment is simply breathtaking: green, lush, peaceful, authentic — nature at its very best. Wildlife is everywhere around you, and there is a sense of peace and disconnection from everyday life that is incredibly rare to find nowadays. We felt like Tarzan in the jungle. During our stay, we also did several tours — the canopy tour, the zip lines, and the night tour — and every single one of them was amazing. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and make you feel completely safe at all times. For our children, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and for us too. For me, El Remanso completely redefines luxury. Luxury today is not about gold taps or marble floors — it is about peace, silence, wildlife, feeling disconnected from the world and deeply connected to nature. That is the greatest luxury of all, and El Remanso delivers it perfectly. I cannot recommend El Remanso enough. And as my daughter said before we even had left: “We’re coming back next year.”
