My family stayed at Savegre in March 2026 and could not have had a better experience. The grounds are gorgeous - like staying in a botanical garden - the rooms are beautifully appointed and so comfortable. We took exciting 4x4s up the mountain and found owls and viewed hummingbirds galore from the jungle viewing platform. Food was delicious and generous. Service was lovely and everyone working there was so nice.

We experienced the beauty of the 7200. high canopy with hiking along the babbling river, birdwatching, old growth forest. the ambience at our hotel and restaurant were exceptional. Everything was five stars.

We spent two nights/days at Sevegre at the end of a one-week birding trip planned for us by Costa Rica Focus. It was a very special place, beautiful and peaceful, and a 5-star birding experience, but I had a few issues with the lodge itself. Arrival Getting to the lodge is a bit dicey (steep, windy road), so we were glad that we had a driver! After that hair-raising experience, the person who greeted us at reception was not warm and welcoming; they just gave us a map and said we had to make a dinner reservation right away if we wanted to eat. We were given one key for three people. We also had to wear wristbands for our entire stay, which was annoying. (At our two previous hotels in Costa Rica, we were greeted warmly, and with glasses of fresh juice!, and given lots of information.) Property/Rooms The property is beautiful and well cared for, with manicured gardens and hummingbird feeders around the reception area and mountain trails and a viewing platform in the hills above (the lodge has a jeep to take you up to the trailheads if you don't want to walk the steep, 1-mile road). (There's also a garden with feeders and a viewing platform on the property, that you have to pay separately for ($10/person) if your not on a guided birding tour.) Our room was spacious and comfortable (we did need to use the heat at night; there is also AC), although the light in both the bedroom and bathroom was very dim! Great shower, comfortable beds with warm duvets, in-room safe. Dining The dining room was a bit fancy for our tastes. We didn't wind up eating dinner there either night, since nothing on the menu appealed and it was a bit pricey. It was not typical Costa Rican cuisine. Most patrons were tour groups at long tables, The breakfast buffet was really good: also less typically Costa Rican (although there was gallo pinto) and more geared towards international tourists. But plenty of choices, hot and cold, including fruit and yogurt, homemade jams and juices. We ate in the bar both nights: more casual. Food was fine, though not typical Costa Rican (burgers/pizza). We had lunch one day at Miriam's Quetzels (an average casado) and the other day across the road at Lauraceas Lodge, which was really good! Local trout tacos. There are canned drinks, sodas and alcoholic drinks, for sale in the lodge lobby but no snacks. Coffee My biggest issue with the hotel overall was coffee (and I am not a big coffee drinker). Almost everyone staying there was getting up super early for a birding tour but there was no coffee available until the dining room opened for breakfast: no in-room coffee, no urns in the lobby. And then for some reason, the coffee in the dining room at breakfast was the one thing (along with tea) that was not buffet style. You had to beckon a waiter; since the cups are tiny, this was ridiculous. This was different from the other three hotels we stayed in. I hope they consider making a change! Spa There is a spa on the property, but I think it must be run separately since there is no info about it in the reception lobby, or upon check-in. I had a 30-minute birder's massage, which was wonderful. With a treatment, you can also use the indoor jacuzzi. Highly recommend! Birding Tour This was the reason we were there and it was amazing! Raul took us on a half-day birding tour, starting at 5:15 AM to see the resplendent quetzel (we saw 2!); we wish we had worn more than fleeces for this part of the day (hats, gloves, thicker pants) since it was pretty cold standing on the road in the dark. The tour with Raul was wonderful: we saw lots of species with him and enjoyed learning from him about birds and the area.
