“Excellent lodge in rain forest”

It’s a very nice hotel with good food. The rooms are clean and have AC and fans. There is lots of nature, great trails, and a stocked bird watching station good for photographers. It’s also close to the river.

We struck gold with a room that directly overlooked the river which was great for swinging in the hammock and watching the kingfishers and herons in action. The pool was lovely and refreshing for the hottest part of the day, the nature/birdwatching tour into the primary forest was great with a hotel guide with good views of howler monkeys, birds and bullet ants. We dined on pizzas both nights in the downstairs restaurant rather than the buffet upstairs which was where the bulk of people (mainly groups) ate and they were freshly made and delicious.

Selva Verde Lodge was such a fun place to begin our trip to Costa Rica. I felt like I was at a very nice summer camp. The dining room served excellent, simple food with a great view of the surrounding river and jungle. They put fruit out for the birds, so it was easy to sit and watch them. The pool was perfect after a hot day looking at birds in the nearby biological reserve. Not fancy, but super relaxing and luxurious in its own way.

This lodge is very popular with serious birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts and is geared up to their needs, such as boot cleaning stations at the entrance to the room blocks. There are trained naturalist guides, a lecture area, information boards and, of course, the excellent bird feeding station just outside the restaurant. Our room (59) was spacious with two double beds and seating area. Upon entering it smelled a bit musty but that soon dissipated. The bed was warm and comfortable and we slept well despite the distant road noise which was masked somewhat by the gentle hum of the ceiling fans. The river facing rooms should be even quieter. We appreciated the easy availability of filtered water, both hot and chilled, from the dispensers and the reliable WiFi. Breakfast was a very good buffet and the à la carte restaurant served high quality Italian cuisine at reasonable prices. It’s possible to follow trails within the grounds on both sides of the road or across the river with hotel guides. We got a close up view of a sloth just next to the swimming pool and for birds you can’t beat just watching from the balcony.
