“Exception Telegrafo”

Telegrafo is very nice hotel, clean and located near all the historical sites. For everyone's information, the Hotel now has hot water! It started the week I was there -- it was just great. Everyone at Telegrafo was very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend the Hotel to all travelers.

The Hotel Telegrafo has recently emerged from a lengthy, expensive renovation process and the result is a very attractive building, with some fancy amenities, in sharp contrast to its previously run-down condition. At the date of this review, the bars in the lobby and rooftop are open daily. There are a only a limited number of rooms open and no functioning restaurant. The marketing plan apparently it to pitch to a higher end clientele who are prepared to pay the room rate ($100 + per night), however in practice it is doubtful if such a market exists for this relatively small town. On the positive side, the bartenders are friendly and do a good job of mixing up a variety of cocktails. The rooftop bar is THE place to hang out in downtown Bayamo. On the negative side, it is unclear if this is still a teaching hotel, however it is clear that management seriously needs to go to back school to learn the basics. Staff do not know how to respond to basic requirements, such as cleaning up messes. For some reason, the Havana fashion trend of placing a Jacuzzi hot tub in the middle of the rooftop bar has caught on here, however it difficult to determine the logic behind this. In addition, in view of the Cubans' obliviousness to dirt and their inability/unwillingness to uphold minimum public health standards at hotels swimming pools, they should not even dream of setting up a Jacuzzi as it will be magnet for bacteria. In summary, the Telegrafo is well worth a visit to check the renovations and the rooftop bar. Management needs improvement.
