We can not understand the previous horrible reviews for Costasur, We did not regret booking this vacation at any moment. The flight with Air Transat was good, the transfer to and from the airport was efficient and organized with incredible views thru the mountains. We were well taken care of upon arrival and escorted to our beautiful half of a bungalow on the beach. An enormous room and bed, clean and comfortable, the bathroom equally good with never a lack of hot water. We loved the location, so close to the beach and beach bar and a short stroll to the main lobby and the buffet. We never went hungry and especially enjoyed the fresh shrimp cooked on demand, the roast pig and ice cream. The staff on the entire resort was friendly, helpful and always have a smile for you. We didn't use the pool, being beach people but looked, clean, cool and inviting.They were constantly making improvements all over the resort, new stairs, new murals, new loungers, new beach umbrellas, the entire time we were there. And Trinidad is a hop on/off bus away that runs daily. A beautiful, old city with handmade souvenirs, not the factory stuff. And we suggest a horse carriage ride thru the city to see all the sites. Incredible. We also used a local guide Hector Hernandez (hectorguidecienfuegos@gmail.com) who with his driver, picked us up at the hotel and took us to El Nicho Falls. We had an awesome hike, lunch and were returned to the hotel for a very reasonable price. And on top of it all, the entire two weeks, we did not see one drop of rain. We were also included in an awesome repeaters celebration as it was our second but not our last to this beautiful little gem. Was our 11th trip to Cuba. Thank you Club Amigo

“Love the improvements!”

I returned from yet another vacation at my favourite Trinidad home, love this hotel. There's been a lot of updates since I was here last November. The first notable change is at the lobby got rid of those terrible red couches from the Breezes hotel  that they put in briefly last year. They've installed beautiful brand-new rattan  lounges and chairs, with really nice neutral fabrics with flashes of gold metallic in it. Looks really nice and inviting. And they are comfortable too! In the lobby there is no longer a computer desk. The hotel now has Wi-Fi in certain areas, but not in the bungalows. In the main lobby and the pool area you will get the best reception. You no longer buy an internet card from the desk. You buy your internet time from the desk instead and they give you the code to be able to use the internet. Usually one cuc for one hour. The hotel and bungalows have been entirely refreshed with new paint. The entire hotel is a lovely Caribbean blue and white now. It looks really warm and inviting. The footpaths have had new lights installed in places, and lights updated with better bulbs in other places. The back path to the bungalows definitely has better lights installed. . Currently some of the pavement walkways in that area are still broken and they will be repairing that later on as they renovate the hotel. You still don't need a flashlight anymore. Along the right side of the hotel, the path leading from behind the dining room to the bungalows is extremely well it now. There are flood lights across the way where they're building the new Melia hotels, and it lights up the whole area. All of those cedar trees along the pathway have been completely thinned out. With the renovations, the snack bar is being moved to the right side of the pool area will you now have your snack bar and your drinks. That apparently was opening the day after I left on November 17th. Can't wait to see it when I go back! It looks like it's going to be really big and gorgeous! In the old space where the old bar was, they're looking at making it into a disco for the future. That'll be attached to where the entertainment is at night. It'll be a really good Improvement! The pool area has also been updated and has many new umbrellas oh, so there's now lots of shade available. The loungers look pristine and new, and the pool was clear and clean daily!  The grounds themselves, are well maintained with a lot of the trees around the Bungalows removed so no more mosquito and dragonfly now! I see that they're installing little palm trees ib  different areas of the grounds now. For the beach, there is multiple Palapas, plenty of new loungers, are the beach is clean and debris free. I understand that the two stairways that go down from the Bungalows to the beach entrance will be updated with new ones shortly. The Bungalows themselves have also been painted inside and out. Nice and refreshing! And I noticed that we have new pillows- wonderful Improvement in the Bungalows LOL all of the Bungalows now have their own independent hot water tanks, I never had a water shortage, it was always nice and hot, hotter than it's usually been in the past even! Aside from that, there was always a great water flow with the pressure. They updated the Bungalows also with new blow dryers, and added an additional towel racks. Two big blue bath towels are now in the room when you arrive. You no longer have to go and pick them up. For the dining room in the food, it has also had a refreshing upgrade. The tables no longer have tablecloths. Instead they have really nice woven table runners. It's a nice modern touch, and it looks much cleaner and fresher. Not to mention that stains don't show on them! They had some updated food presentations made of fruits, vegetables, Etc. The whole food stations are the same, but the way they are presenting the food is very much updated and adds a certain amount of charm to the buffet area.  The service in the restaurant is vastly improved! Most times I was always able to find an empty seat, with the flatware napkins and stemware already on the table. They did have a few very large groups show up maybe two hundred or so at a time, when the dining room was packed. And these cases if you waited for 2 minutes you would grab a seat. Turnover was really quick. The other thing is when you have this many people in a full dining room and somebody leave the table to give you an empty seat, you might have to wait just a moment or two to get your table reset with flatware napkins and stemware. The staff is extremely attentive to you in this situation. You no longer have to go hunting for your own Cutlery! They watch for you when you come in and if your table is not set they do it immediately.  The only issue I saw at all, was that the usual coffee machines that they have for your breakfast and lunch service were not working correctly. This is to be expected as the machines are old and will be replaced shortly. However they have taken care of this situation too! They now provide large urns with fresh brewed coffee, that is replenished continuously. I never had to wait for more than a moment or two. The milk still comes from the prior machines, but the coffee is fresh, strong, and hot and perfect have a great Cuban breakfast. At times with the busy turn over with so many guests, you might have to wait a moment or two for a fresh coffee cup or for an ice cream cup. This is never a problem though. You don't have to wait long like you used to. It seems that as soon as the tables are cleared when you leave, they pushed the cart back into the kitchen and the dishes are immediately washed and replenished. Really, is not an issue to wait for just a moment to have fresh clean dishes! At a vast improvement over prior years. The food was plentiful. Always had pork, fish, or chicken on the grill. Sometimes at lunch they have the grilled hamburgers or hotdogs. I've always disliked the Cuban hamburgers and hotdogs before. But I did try them this year. Those hamburgers or the tastiest ones I have ever tried even in Canada! I think I fell in love with the hamburgers in Cuba this year for the first time LOL there is always fresh eggs for breakfast, there's always fresh orange juice or mango juice available. There's a really big selection of salads at all times during the day. Plentiful potatoes and squash, always butter, and sometimes even flavoured butter! There was always fresh bread, always watermelon and citrus available. For the first time ever in Cuba I saw there was broccoli and cauliflower! On most days, there was always the fresh lettuce and grated cabbage for salads. However after they had the really big groups through there's a few days where these were not available. That's normal after a big group. I'm sure they were replenished for the next week as per usual. There is usually many little bananas, the tomatoes were there a few times, however from my time in the city the week prior I understand that it's not tomato season, and they are not there this often at most Cuba and resorts. In summary, I've always loved this hotel as my second home. Yes it is older. However the updates that they have done have been a spectacular Improvement. I had a blast, love going home

Six of us stayed at the CostaSur for 2 weeks in January 2024, our second visit. It was a bit strange. The resort was about 20% full This meant that the a la carte restaurant and the gym were closed and the evening entertainment was on about twice a week. When we complained, we were given a lobster dinner in the almost deserted cafeteria. But there were advantages to the low occupancy. It was very quiet and relaxed. No problem finding a lounger on the beach. And the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was well prepared but bland with limited selection.There was always enough food. When we got bored with the food we went into Trinidad and ate very well. There are other positives. The beach is the best place to swim on the Ancon Peninsula. The Bungalows are huge and overlooking the beach.  The proximity to Trinidad made up for the shortcoming In the end we all agreed that, in spite of the problems, we were glad we stayed there and would return in the future. To summarize: the Costasur is not a good place to stay if you want to party or if you are a foodie. But its great if you are looking for a quiet, inexpensive place to say if you want to relax and spend time in Trinidad.
