We spent two weeks at Costasur in a bungalow. The room itself was very comfortable, and everything worked. The air conditioners seemed almost brand new, and there was no musty smell in either the sitting room or the bedroom. We were steps from the beach. The beach itself was better than I was expecting, lots of nice new loungers, sunbeds, LOTS of shade. The natural pool was so much fun to swim and float in--no worries about floaties drifting out to sea. The snorkeling was really very good too, even in the really shallow spots. The buffet was small and repetitive, but I didn't get bored. There were always two kinds of protein being grilled, usually pork and fish. There was usually another option on the buffet itself, chicken or ropa vieja. There was also a pasta station, and always soup at lunch and dinner--the soups were amazing. There were eggs, bread, and butter for the entire 2 weeks we were there. The mango and pineapple were AMAZINGLY fresh and delicious, as was the swiss-roll type cake that only showed up the night the Germans arrived. To be fair, we seemed to be the only Canadians our first week, and maybe 5 more showed up week 2. It was VERY low season. Actually, because of this, I'd recommend tipping in USD, as it was hard to do the loonie/toonie swap with so few Canadians taking part. A CAVEAT: because we were the only Canadians, we were told to go to the Melia next door to meet the Nexus (Westjet/Sunwing rep). We pretty much got in an argument with security every. single. time. You may have better luck going via the front vs the beach, but...brace yourself. Melia=hassle, even though Melia people were welcome to use the Costasur beach. The beverages are limited. If you are a non-drinker, maybe bring some water flavours or your favourite pop, as there weren't many mixes. There was usually cola, and sometimes juice. If you're a wine drinker, especially red, BYOB. Even at the buffet, only one type of pop (mate or cola), beer, and water were offered. You will not get fancy Spanish coffees here, but the coffee is very good. The staff was fantastic. Very friendly, willing to be helpful. I only saw the entertainment guy like, twice, but he was bubbly and a very good dancer. Security kept a very close eye on our room, especially on the weekends when local families would come to enjoy the beach. Actually, change some money or have small US bills on hand, as there are a couple of vendors (ice cream and popcorn) that show up on weekends. Those were the only vendors we saw. Some mosquitoes at night, bring bug spray. Wasn't bothered by anything on the beach. I think my BIGGEST...well only, really, issue at the hotel was the lack of soap in the public washrooms. We ended up getting very sick about three days into our vacation, and I can't help but suspect it was food poisoning. The staff, food service and bartenders, use those washrooms. No soap. I actually left a bar of our room soap in the lobby ladies', but it was gone the next time I went to pee. Please, please, please...soap. I don't want anyone to have to be as ill as we were, staff or guests.

“Club Amigo Costa Sur”

This resort is a little gem near beautiful Trinidad on the Ancon Peninsula. A sweet beach and bungalow accommodation. Housekeeping is immaculate. Bartenders, especially at pool and beach, are friendly and professional. Grounds and pool area well maintained. Food is nicely presented, reasonable variety with good waitstaff. The DJ was very helpful to other tourists and to staff as well. The problems are serious though. Infrastructure is poor, most rooms smell (very unpleasant) from sewage. There is constant digging and attempts at repairs on pipes that are in very poor condition. The front desk staff have little to no English or French. Even with translators seemed friendly but unable to answer queries without outside aid from the Holasun and Sunwing reps. One female tourist arrived late at night and was sent unescorted through very dark grounds to a distant bungalow. Lack of English skills (there is German skills) and poor septic conditions will make Canadian tourists think about rebooking here. Things are very difficult in Cuba right now. We hope Club Amigo Costasur is serious about retaining Canadian tourism and can deal with the above problems. We have been there several times and hope to return.

“Nothing fancy but an amazing beach and great price.”

Comfy, roomy, sparkling clean bungalows right on the fantastic beach lined with palapas and beach chairs, the mostly shallow, warm turquoise water graced with a constructed deeper swimming area. Not many people were there for our 3-night visit, so the beach was wonderfully private and luxurious. The food was plentiful with limited, bland options. We were okay with that because the place was all-inclusive with a budget per-person price. The choice of drinks was limited, too, but again, the price was right, and Trinidad is a bus or taxi ride away. One major downside for us: no one, and I mean no one, spoke English.

“A good, basic place to stay near Trinidad”

Six of us stayed at the CostaSur for 2 weeks in January 2024, our second visit. It was a bit strange. The resort was about 20% full This meant that the a la carte restaurant and the gym were closed and the evening entertainment was on about twice a week. When we complained, we were given a lobster dinner in the almost deserted cafeteria. But there were advantages to the low occupancy. It was very quiet and relaxed. No problem finding a lounger on the beach. And the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The food was well prepared but bland with limited selection.There was always enough food. When we got bored with the food we went into Trinidad and ate very well. There are other positives. The beach is the best place to swim on the Ancon Peninsula. The Bungalows are huge and overlooking the beach.  The proximity to Trinidad made up for the shortcoming In the end we all agreed that, in spite of the problems, we were glad we stayed there and would return in the future. To summarize: the Costasur is not a good place to stay if you want to party or if you are a foodie. But its great if you are looking for a quiet, inexpensive place to say if you want to relax and spend time in Trinidad.
