We had a lovely holiday but there are small things that could have made a big difference to the customer experience Pro’s Villefranche Sur Mer is beautiful and a great base for travelling around. We explored Nice (Don’t miss the waterfall at Colline du Chateau - also don’t look for the actual Chateau as it was demolished in 1700 I think!) We also went to Beaulieu Sur Mer. Very hot and 100 euro for sunbed/shade! Eze Village beautiful garden at the top and fab free perfume factory tour at Fragonard. The pool area is nice and the hotel has a family feel. Rooms are clean and fresh towels regularly provided. Towels are also available for pool use and sun tan lotion and mosquito repellent available (much needed!) Reeva the dog! Air-con Con’s The triple room we booked didn’t look much like the photos. I think the garden rooms are likely better. There is no door to rear or outside space and the decor felt somewhat tired. The location is further from the seafront than I anticipated and it is really too hot to walk down (a lot of steps/stairs taking around 30 minutes) So plan to book Uber’s to travel there and back. Also there is only one restaurant in walking distance. Col Brasserie (The steak was excellent and great for a pizza night!). Nice bakery in walking distance and Casino Supermarket. So more Uber’s needed for restaurants for evening meals- we recommend Spalato and Dry! A few things I’d change for a more enjoyable customer experience: Add air-con to the lounge area so it can be used - I found it too hot to sit there during the day. Add a fridge to each room. There were ants in the room at times. The electricity socket was not secure and coming away from the wall A small broken tile in the toilet. No food or drink allowed at the pool and no food available at the hotel. (Apart from breakfast). Add a few more large umbrellas to pool area as there is not sufficient beds in the shade. Maybe introduce a simple pool drinks and snack menu. Also maybe host a weekly drinks evening so new guests could meet might be a nice idea.

The fiancee du pirate is an small owner run hotel high above Villefranche sur Mer in Col de Villefranche. The price is reasonable compared to those on the main sea front. The breakfast was excellent although starting at 8.30am was a little late for us and at 16 euros a person, I thought a little expensive. The owners were friendly most of the time, although their constant smoking in the public areas was a little disappointing. The rooms are as I expected, a little tired in places but the aircon worked well and the beds were comfortable. The pool was lovely, quiet most of the time and a perfect temperature with a lovely view. Walking to Villefranche sur Mer ( where the main restaurants and shops were) down the 700 steps, took some effort and took about 25 minutes and I would say only the very fit would attempt to climb back up in the height of summer so we spend lots of money on ubers instead of walking back, although we did walk on several occasions when the uber vehicles were unavailable. (Def not recommended for those with less than moderate fitness levels though!) Would I stay here again? No, mainly because of the location being so high above the main town. If you are on a budget and want to stay on the outskirts of villefranche, then it's not a bad option but I think you can do better in Beaulieu or Nice itself and then catch the train to the lovely and lively Villefranche sur mer.
