I went there because it had a view of the Libyan sea and at night no light pollution so I can view the Milky Way. To my surprise I found my kind of paradise. Yes there are no shops or grocery stores and you have to drive up a mountain road for20 minutes and there are 17 switchbacks. That’s perfect for me. I went for a hike and discovered alien plant life - really bizarre bushes, upon research I discover many of those plants are only found around Kapetaniana Village - no where else in Crete or on Earth. Also there was so much wild thyme you can smell it in the air. To get a good sunset photo I climbed the hill at the highest point on the road in. It was stunning the view. It’s very peaceful and if you like hiking and exploring this spot is best if you want seclusion. I enjoyed it and I will definitely be back

Friendly, attentive staff, delicious traditional Cretan cuisine, and beautifully decorated rooms characterize this peaceful getaway, nestled in a renovated part of an old Cretan village. The accommodations are traditional villas that are fully equipped and exceptionally clean. This spot is perfect for deep personal reflection, complemented by its quiet setting and close proximity to secluded beaches, albeit a challenging trek. The overall hospitality is outstanding, making it an essential visit when in Crete.

The drive up to this traditional mountain retreat is quite scary in a bus! We were unlucky enough to have very cool weather for April with chilly winds and fog over the mountains. We stayed in a traditional stone cottage which,luckily had hearing as it was very cold. Our cottage had a kitchen with amenities, downstairs bathroom and two bedrooms upstairs. Made night time visits to the toilet interesting! The cottage was very comfortable with modern conveniences and lovely toiletries. Breakfast was delicious as were the two dinners we had there. We enjoyed some slow cooked lamb, roast potatoes, salads, nice wines, mushrooms and home made moussaka. Don’t bother with the liver! It’s a beautiful place just to enjoy the view ( depending on the weather), and perhaps do some walking. Don’t forget to see the UNESCO church in the village.

The location of kapetaniana village up on the asterousia mountain with views of the Libyan sea. is amazing! I will give them credit for what they’ve done up there, being so far from civilization. The closest store or taverna is 20 to 30 minutes with difficult and scary road but the hospitality is not as expected. I am originally from Crete from the area of chania and their service came across as very laid-back and hospitable and unprofessional . We had to ask multiple times for any activities or how the system works there.. They have exclusivity for breakfast, lunch, dinner and any services so they should be clear and prices should be stated. Otherwise, you have to come prepared with your groceries and all you need to eat. We did not pre-book a room because we wanted to check it out before we get there and decide how many nights we were going to stay. Initial agreement was for one night for two couples two separate rooms but they wanted us to stay in one unit with2 bedrooms and shared bathrooms. I felt too much pressure to decide on something I didn’t really want. We were threatened that we had to pay the second full night because we wanted to leave after our first night. The responsible person Poppi was very pushy . I was not very happy with the way she behaved and even though I liked the place, I don’t think I will be going back. Do not pre-pay the room! The rooms are clean, but we ended up getting a room that the fireplace was malfunctioning, and there was smoke coming out of it. it was also cold in the room and the heat was not sufficient for this time of the year. They only have air-conditioning unit in the rooms. Anyway, The views are amazing and our company was great, so we had a good time with good wine and Rakhi . The staff at the restaurant was also very polite but not very informed and the food was very good. Therefore, the 4 stars are not for the behavior, but for the suboptimal services. The pool, even though it was supposed to be heated it was not operating. Could behavior goes long ways and gets you more customers ! No other organized activities were available. It’s a paradise for hikers though and nature watching. It is not easy to get down to the beach from the hiking paths. If you can bargain the price down and you like to hike, you should stay there.
