Gorgeous hotel, pefect location, friendly and engaging staff! My friend and I were in Amalfi for a week and stayed here and LOVED IT! Laura at reception was so helpful when we arrived. She showed us around and gave us all the information we needed. She also was extremely helpful in booking us trips to Pompeii and Capri. Tip - do both of these! The trip to the Isle of Capri was a high point in our vacation for sure - just know that you will be picked up in a little dinghy at the Port in Amalfi and get on the actual ferry in Praiano! Also make sure and take your bathing suit as there is a chance on the way back to take a dip in the beautiful deep blue sea! The journey to Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii with a guide was also wonderful. It is a full day trip, but well worth it. Breakfast here is absolutely wonderful. There is a full buffet, but you can also order a pancake or eggs and bacon. Also try the freshly squeezed orange or lemon juice. Cynthia took our orders in the morning and she was so friendly and pleasant. Having a yummy breakfast against the breathtaking backdrop of the Tyrrhenian Sea, while the amazing folks at the hotel take good care of you was definitely a high point! We also had dinner at the hotel, which was fantastic. If you get the chance to try a meal with the Colatura sauce you should try it - this is a specialty in this area and is basically an anchovy sauce - sounds weird, but is a savory "umami"-ful delight. The hotel decor has been noted as "dated" - but I have to say I found it very inviting. The tiles on the floor add a special glow to the view and our room was fantastic. The balcony is a special joy as you can sit out at all hours day or night and enjoy the view of the changing sea and sky. We also had some great customer service from Elisa at reception and everyone we encountered in this hotel was friendly and engaging. A special call-out to our shuttle driver Mauricio (I hope I spelled it right!). In the wild rides up and down the winding roads to and from Amalfi he was so friendly. There is real skill in the ability of the drivers to navigate this rollercoaster of a road - from the sliding by of motorcyles and scooters, the obvious tourists doing their best, the buses that slip side by side with mere centimeters to spare, the pedestrians clinging to the side of the road - it is a drive to remember every time you go. The drivers from the hotel were all excellent and extremely skilled. The shuttle service is extremely convenient and does not hinder you from doing anything at all. They are on time and always available to take you up and down from the hotel. Top Tip - do NOT rent a car and try to drive yourself. I am so glad we took the advice of others and took the train to Amalfi instead of trying to do this ourselves. If you are a skilled ambulance driver in a big city, or a race car driver, go for it - otherwise, take the advice and let others drive you. You will also be able to soak in the immense beauty around you without the stress of these hair raising turns and the shooting by of zippy local motorists who have no patience for you! The hotel also has a private beach that you will love! To note, the beach is entirely made up of small rocks, so if you have sensitive feet make sure and bring some water shoes or strap on sandals you can wear in the water. The water is breathtakingly clear, blue, and so salty you can merely float along on top and enjoy the view up to the clifftops. Make sure you make a least half a day to go the beach. Otherwise - go to Ravello, go on the Lemon Walk (Sentiero dei Limone), definitely go to Capri, check out Positano, stroll through Amalfi, eat a Lemon Sorbet, grab an Aperol or Hugo Spritz, eat a cannoli, enjoy Amalfi. I am obsessed, I'm sure you will be too.

We loved this hotel and location! I was a little concerned when I read that the hotel was out of the town but thank goodness it was. Amalfi town is so congested and busy it was nice to get away from the pollution and crowds. The rooms are small and a little dated but it seemed to fit in with the charm of the hotel. Our room was cleaned everyday, towels changed, when required, our bed line was changed midweek. The balcony is fabulous over looking over the bay with sun loungers and a small table and chairs. On arrival Valeria was there to greet us and show us around all the reception team were very helpful, I can’t understand how people can say they were cold? Breakfast is very good a large buffet and eggs, bacon, omelettes etc are available to order. Cynthia took our orders most mornings and was delightful. The shuttle bus was a godsend! After getting buses from the town to Ravello etc it was great to be able to book our bus and not have to get into a fight to board a bus. We went into Amalfi town for dinner one night, it is sooo busy we couldn’t wait to get back and relax in the bar. Giuseppe waited on us in the restaurant and bar and was very charming and efficient, the team seemed to have a great relationship. There are a few restaurants further up the “hill” which you can walk to in 10 minutes or the reception will call them and they will pick you up and bring you back! Campania is one of them and was very nice we also tried Gerry’s. I will definitely be returning to the Excelsior and can’t wait.

I am rating this hotel 5/5 because of my interaction and experience with Laura, the front desk agent. Wow, Laura is the definition of customer service going beyond her call of duty. We were a day late to check in for our prepaid reservation due to road blocks from Sorrento to Amalfi. When we arrived at the hotel we explained our situation to Laura and she was quick to show compassion and understanding to our situation. She told us that she would find a way to keep us at the hotel another night to compensate for the night we lost. The next day after check in she had confirmed that we were able to stay for our third night as the nights we had paid for were for 3. She is a marvellous asset to the hotel and hospitality Industry as a whole. She was helpful, kind, professional and amazing at her job. She turned a negative situation into a positive one and my fiancé and I couldn’t be anymore grateful for her. Laura she be recognized in every way possible. Grazie mille!!
