Booked for a week and did not know much about Ischia beforehand but what a gem! It is a wonderful island with loads to see and a charming authentic feel not spoilt by mass tourism. The Hotel Citara was just perfect for us- family run, not too big or corporate, good value, clean and in a good location. Mini market and a few restaurants close by and easy access to Foria. Poseidon thermal spa and beach within walking distance. The room was spacious and was cleaned every day. Breakfast was buffet style with plenty of choice and the outdoor pool was a delightful area to relax and chat to other guests who were all lovely people. There was no silliness of putting towels on sun beds early morning which was a pleasant change and there is a lovely chilled atmosphere. The outdoor pool area is much nicer than the photographs suggest and the smell from the beautiful plants is just delightful. The hotel runs a shuttle bus and the public bus stop is just outside the hotel making sight seeing across the island really easy. Staff were all lovely and since our luggage was delayed they helped us with some calls and translation which was much appreciated. Gennaro is a real asset and always available to give advice on places to visit. We had an early morning flight on departure and the breakfast pic nic was most welcome and unexpected. The hotel and island surpassed our expectations and we hope to return.Thanks to all the hotel team- you do a great job!

Stayed at costa citara for 7 nights solo traveler Lovely staff and hotel Travel plug if from UK is 3 prong I brought a euro 2 prong and had to charge my phone in hairdryer socket. Bus service run 15 mins across the island If you do not speak italian don't speak to the driver get in bus use bank… more

Bus service run 15 mins across the island If you do not speak italian don't speak to the driver get in bus use bank card to pay its fine I used mine , Go to bus station purchase weekly ticket 14 euros at kiosk Great holiday hotel was lovely recommend for solo travelers

“A bit disappointing”

When we arrived it was lovely, very basic but very nice. Pool is lovely. Following morning at breakfast we were greeted by the rudest member of staff I’ve ever encountered in over 30 years of visiting Italy and the islands. I am a coeliac and told TUI and contacted the hotel directly before going. I asked him about my breakfast and he said very very rudely ‘ I don’t know about that you’ll just have to find something to eat’ put a dampener on what should have been an exciting first morning at our hotel. His name was Genaro. He had the people skills of a fly. A lady then arrived and found me something to eat. The following days I was presented with bread only suitable for toasting, with no separate toaster to use and on most occasions they had ‘run out’ of gluten free cereal leaving me with only yogurts suitable to eat as I didn’t want the stodgy cake I was also given. After 9 days I had to ask for our bedding to be changed, there’s signs saying it’s changed every 4 days. The walls are very thin. TV and talking can be heard. All of the sunbeds had towels on by 7.30 in the morning. The rest of the staff were very pleasant and friendly but he somewhat spoilt it for us and we won’t be returning.

Starting with the positives: staff were lovely, pool was great with easy access and a nice shelf around the inside to sit on, chill, and enjoy a drink or chat to other guests. Always plenty of sunloungers. Roof terrace was hardly used and a nice spot for chilling. Everywhere was clean. Now the negatives: my single room was the size of a cell with a single bed which was a metal frame put-you-up with a memory foam mattress on top. A single door opening onto a balcony overlooking the building site next door. No shutter on the door, just a heavy curtain on the inside so the door couldn't stay open if the curtain was closed. This meant the air-conditioning was needed almost constantly and it had a faulty fan at certain settings that was noisy. No mirror except in bathroom, and a tiny shower with nowhere to put toiletries. Only 2 sockets and one was not accessible. Breakfast was very limited and consisted mainly of sweet pastries and cakes. No fresh fruit, not even a tomato. Only a couple of places to eat within a safe walking distance but buses were easily accessible if you wanted to use them. I got a reasonable price when I booked this holiday through Tui so don't feel too short changed but im very glad I didn't pay more and I won't be going back.
