My wife and I decided to use Sorrento as our "base" during a 10-day vacation in Italy, and we did so partly because Sorrento looked absolutely beautiful and partly because the town sits not too far from other sites we wanted to see: Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, the Amalfi Coast. We chose the Hotel Antiche Mura based on reviews and on photos, as well as on the prices, which seemed reasonable. And we were not disappointed! The hotel itself is a beautiful structure, full of yellow and white flourishes, immaculately kept, and managed by incredibly polite and helpful staff at the front desk, the bar, and the breakfast room. All speak English. And the breakfasts are delightful: so many dishes to chose from, including healthy options (as well as some not-so-healthy but deliciously fresh ones, some including locally grown lemons). Don't miss the section of the old city wall in the hotel garden, and the lemon grove there; and of course you can't miss the gorge (or "Valley of the Mills" as they call it there) over which the hotel is perched--it's an amazing site, and one you won't tire of no matter how many days you stay. The vibrant Piazza Tasso is only one block away, along with the narrow cobblestoned medieval streets with all their shops and churches. (If you look carefully, you can find many Roman artifacts integrated into later medieval and Renaissance structures here and there within walking distance of the hotel.) I very highly recommend Hotel Antiche Mura and would very much stay there again.

We booked this hotel for 2 nights and ended up staying 6. That should tell you all you need to know, but I will elaborate. The location is excellent, a block from the Piazza Tasso and the Corso Italia. We walked all over and when finally ready to head home it always seemed we were only 5 minutes away. The hotel s elegant, but not in a stuffy way. There are wonderful photos of historic Sorrento in the lobby. Our room was roomy, lovely, with a comfortable bed, good heating (important in November) and nearly instant hot water. Our terrace with its table and chairs looked down on the ancient ravine to the old mill. The staff were all attentive, helpful, accommodating, and friendly. They whisked us in when we arrived and soon had us ensconced in our room. We loved coming into breakfast where Rocco, Antonio, Rita, and others made us feel comfortable and a bit pampered. A second cappucino? Coming right up! There’s a nice bar in the lobby and we made a habit of getting ourselves a decaf cappucino and an Amaretto di Sarono as a way of settling in back “home.” Special mention for the parking. 25 euros a night, but worth it. Cheaper than the public parking across the street and way more convenient. I could call the front desk and they would have our car waiting out front ready to go. This is a wonderful base for exploring Sorrento and the surrounding area.

What an absolutely fantastic experience at this beautiful hotel in the middle of Sorrento, Italy. This was our very first time traveling to Italy. The complete accommodations, the entire staff, the amenities, the food and overall atmosphere were beyond anything we had expected. The hotel is perfectly located within easy walking distance to so many fabulous restaurants and plenty of shopping. We totally enjoyed the five (5) nights we stayed at this hotel. We really wish we could have stayed longer.

“Excellent hotel, comfortable, efficient and in a good position.”

This is an excellent hotel, very elegant. The location is good for lots of restaurants, all types of shops, and many sites of interest, whatever your taste. This is an excellent hotel, very elegant. The location is good for lots of restaurants, all types of shops, and many sites of interest, whatever your taste. We did not have any problem with noise, even though we were facing the road. The rooms are lovely, extremely well furnished and the attention to detail is superb. We could not fault the cleanliness; the maid service was extremely good. The service generally is impeccable. The staff are friendly, helpful, efficient, and obviously conscientious. Although it is not at the cheap end of the market, it is certainly good value for money. The breakfasts are delicious, with many choices. The staff there were again really helpful and considerate. There is an attractive garden with a pool and a well-served bar. We were unable to find any negatives except perhaps that the beds were a little firm for us, but we dealt with that. Obviously that would not be an issue for most people! We would certainly have no problem recommending this hotel to anyone.
