“Ideal Hotel for Exploring the Cinque Terre Area”

The members of the staff, particularly Sara at the Front Office and Paula in the kitchen, were the best. The rooms were also very comfortable and the location was most ideal for exploring the Cinque Terre area. If you’re looking for an inexpensive hotel but doesn’t disappoint, look no farther.

I booked a three-night stay in an Economy Single room, so I wasn’t expecting luxury but my allocated room on arrival had a shower that was difficult to access because of the confined space. The man on reception found me another single room, which suited me perfectly. The bed was really comfortable, everything clean. It wasn’t a power shower, but it was really good. The air conditioning worked like a dream: really quiet and highly effective in the oppressively hot weather. I found it was sufficient to switch it on when I returned to my room and that a pleasant room temperature was maintained even when I turned the air conditioning off at night. The room rate was good value and competitively priced compared with alternative accommodation throughout this popular tourist area. This hotel really is the perfect base for exploring the Cinque Terre, being adjacent to the railway station with access to the frequent trains that get you quickly to where you want to go. I realised how lucky I was to be staying there. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Check-in process was easy. An older lady served us and she was super friendly even with her broken English. Hotel felt like your own home; comfortable and quiet eventhough it’s located on a road directly opposite La Spezia train station. There’s a direct access with either stairs or elevator to the train station by just crossing the road. La Spezia train station is the direct access if you want to go to Cinque Terre and visit all of those 5 villages…very easy! Hotel management runs by family. There was this younger guy served us and I think he’s the son of the family. One night we’ve arrived late and he allowed us to use the restaurant to sit down and eat our takeaway food. He gave us hot water to make tea and also allowed us to use the microwave. Room was nice and clean with comfortable bed. Room set up was just like a normal room in a house…we felt like home. We were very happy during our stay. Definitely will comeback in the future.

“No-Frills But Brilliant Base For Cinque Terre Towns”

There are no bells or whistles here. It is a very basic, clean no-frills hotel with an incredibly convenient location for accessing the Cinque Terre towns. We planned to spend 4 days at Cinque Terre but we had a car and we absolutely did not want to drive around the notoriously difficult Cinque Terre towns. Hotel Mary was a perfect solution. They reserved a car parking spot for us around the corner (street parking but free). We were able to leave our car for the next 4 days and didn’t have to go near it until we were leaving. The train station is directly opposite the hotel so each morning, we simply walked across the road, jumped on the train and got off at whichever CT town we’d picked for that day’s hike. It couldn’t have been easier. Despite the proximity of the station, we did not hear any train noise during the night. The station is elevated above the hotel so the noise doesn’t seem to travel. The main road outside is quite busy so there was some traffic noise but nothing excessive and it did not disturb us even though our room faced the road at the front of the hotel. The room was dated and the decor was old-fashioned but our room was spacious and large bags could be easily tucked out of the way. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. When I had trouble finding the allocated car spot, they walked with me back to my car to show me exactly where it was. An unexpected benefit was the number of restaurants within close walking distance which (unlike the Cinque Terre restaurants), stayed open late. This gave us the option of sometimes heading back to La Spezia and still being able to walk out for a late meal. Between the hotel and Piazza Garibaldi, there is a strip of lively restaurants and we ate here a couple of times. Overall, for price and location, this hotel was a good option.
