We chose Hacienda San Ángel knowing it would be expensive, and went for the experience rather than simply a meal. It exceeded our expectations. The setting is extraordinary. We had requested a railing table but were seated at a table located slightly higher and set back two tables from the rail, and in retrospect this gave us an even better perspective. The view over Puerto Vallarta as the sun began to set was enchanting: warm light over the city, a welcome breeze that made the evening perfectly comfortable, and a gradual transition from golden hour to the sparkle of city lights below. It is difficult to imagine a more atmospheric dining room. The ambience deserves special mention. Live music included mariachi (with a harp, which was a surprise), and several singers whose voices were genuinely impressive. The mood felt festive without being intrusive. Despite the elegance of the room, the atmosphere was relaxed — diners chatted easily with neighbouring tables, and what might have been a formal evening instead felt almost like a shared celebration. Service was attentive and professional, though occasionally a touch slow — but since we were in no hurry, this suited the evening perfectly. One detail we appreciated was how staff worked as a team: each table had a primary server, but others stepped in naturally to assist. During a conversation with Natasha — who introduced herself as the granddaughter of the founder, and who is currently running the Hacienda while her mother is away — we learned that new staff were being trained alongside experienced team members. That family continuity and care showed throughout the evening. The food was excellent. My lobster tail — clearly a signature dish — was very good, though admittedly priced at the luxury end of the spectrum. Giant shrimp with a pomegranate-style sauce were beautifully prepared (slightly sweet for my palate, but my wife loved them), and desserts were strong: coconut crème brûlée and flan, both satisfying finishes. As someone with celiac disease, I appreciated the careful handling of gluten-free needs. The staff were cautious and double-checked rather than making casual assurances, which inspired confidence. One small grace note for improvement: the initial greeting at the (locked) front door of the Hacienda felt a bit formal and at odds with the warmth we experienced throughout the rest of the evening — though in a curious way it made the relaxed atmosphere inside even more noticeable. Hacienda San Ángel is not an everyday restaurant. It is a place for special evenings — expensive, yes, but enchanting, memorable, and clearly shaped by family-owners who are deeply invested in hospitality. If you come prepared for the price, and pace yourself to enjoy the setting, it offers an experience that goes well beyond dinner. Reservations are hard to get, especially for sunset, so book at least a week ahead.

We had Saturday night dinner to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Raul was our waiter who was very knowledgeable about the menu and answered every question we had about the sparking wines, menu items and history of Hacienda San ángel. Wow. All the wait staff was professional and well trained. The food was high quality and the mariachi group was excellent. The woman singer came to our table and dedicated a love song to us. Recommend going before the sunset so you can experience the evening light. Bravo! We will be back on our next trip.

“Dinner at Hacienda San Angel”

We were lucky enough to dine at Hacienda San Angel for dinner. The view is stunning. Our server, Marco was wonderful. Never felt rushed, and he anticipated every need. The food was wonderful and we enjoyed the mariachi band.
