This was a BFF trip for my 65th birthday (Dawn, thank you!) From check in to check out, the experience was fabulous. When we arrived, our room was ready, but we opted for a champagne from the lobby bar before heading to our room. And once staff were aware that it was my birthday, we had cake delivered at each meal. Many many thanks for helping make it a memorable day! LOBBY BAR: Speaking of the lobby bar, Mario was great - he greeted us every evening, and made sure our drinks were prepared by him. Thanks, Mario! We tried to get his hat, but no dice, lol! ROOM: Had everything we needed - we had a swim-up room in Block 3, and it was wonderful! Rain shower, king bed, jacuzzi tub (although we did not use it), closet, safe, double sink, bath robes, etc. Our room was cleaned by Felipa every day we were there, and it was immaculate when she was done. If we were in the pool, she would let us know that she was finished. And it smelled so clean afterwards! Felipa, thank you! A couple of items for improvement: (1) Hooks on the walls and on the backs of doors to hang used towels, etc. (2). Not necessarily a room thing, but there is beer in the fridge – we are not beer, drinkers, so would have been nice to have been able to order a bottle of wine or champagne for our fridge instead. We were told we could not order bottles, only glasses. POOL: We did not visit the main/activity pool at all. We were more than happy with the quietness of our swim up pool, which was better than expected. It was also nice to have a building in between our block and the central pool to block most of the music and noise coming from the main pool. The swim up pool was great, so warm, clean, and everything we needed. POOL/BAR SERVICE: We do not have enough words to describe Erick, our poolside server. His sincerity, kindness, friendliness, and prompt service – with absolute perfection with our orders – was exemplary. We became quick friends with him, and we missed him greatly for our last couple of days as he went on a well-deserved vacation. Such a gentleman with a heart of gold!! Erick, from the bottom our hearts, thank you! DOLMA: Mediterranean food restaurant, was so good! We visited this restaurant twice, and both times, our food was amazing. The shrimp risotto was incredible, as was the fettucine with mushrooms. There is a very nice salad/antipasto bar, and the focaccia bread dipped in their homemade tahini dressing was mmmmmmm! The staff was friendly, accommodating, and attentive. In fact, on our second visit, Luca remembered us and made sure we were well looked after. ASIANA: O.M.G. Again, we visited this restaurant twice, and both meals were wonderful. We had Spring Rolls in Pad Thai Sauce, and teriyaki salmon, pad thai, and Korean noodles. Sooo good! LA CASONA: This Mexican restaurant, the sea bass was excellent! Not as memorable as the other restaurants, but the food was very good! PELICANOS: This the oceanfront restaurant that we visited twice for lunch. For me, authentic Caribbean fusion food. We had shrimp cocktail, grilled tuna tostada, clam chowder, Caribbean burger, all very good! SPICE: This is the buffet, which we visited every morning for breakfast and for most lunches. What a great variety of food, from Caribbean, Mexican, Canadian (because we are Canadian!), Asian and beyond. So many build-your-own stations, such as omelettes, nachos and tacos; fresh grilled seafood and meats with potatoes, rice and veggies, salad bar, fresh fruits and breads, savouries and sweets. For us, all of the food was well prepared and delicious! Such a great variety, and I would venture to say agreeable to every palate! SPICE SERVICE: Well, our main guy Miguel. From Day 2 on, we made sure that we sat in his section. He welcomed us every morning with a hearty smile, and a mimosa with just a hint of orange juice! Miguel was such a genuine human being, and he definitely made sure our dining experiences were above and beyond. So much so, that on our last three days, when we walked in for breakfast, we were treated like royalty. Tablecloth, mimosa ready, coffee and tea served and water. And on our last day, bougainvillea petals on our table. He was such a gentleman, and took great pride in making our breakfast and lunch visits memorable. Miguel, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for making our dining experiences at Spice such a pleasure. Honourable mentions at Spice, especially at breakfast, go to Demetrio, Lucas, Victor, as well as Jose. They were always ready for arrival, and were genuinely happy to see us visit them every day. On our last day, we were treated with an absolutely delicious vanilla cake with caramel topping – so good!!! And although we did not catch their names, the ladies at the door upon arrival were so incredible pleasant! Thank you. ROOM SERVICE: We ordered room service a couple of times, and were impressed. Quick service, and depending on what you ordered, very good food. Nachos – a little soggy, but the club sandwich and fries was delish! And Iggy, Halftail and Miggy the iguanas enjoyed the fruit plate we ordered for them lol! THE OCEAN: At this time of year, the sargassum was rampant. The staff at Vivid did their very best to keep it cleared, but the bloom this year was incredible and felt all over the Caribbean coasts, as well up the eastern US coastline. It’s nature, and it happens. We were quite happy to spend our days in our little pool! OTHER EXPERIENCES: We are incredibly thankful to the Security staff for dealing with a very difficult situation we, and we are sure other guests, had with a neighbour. They were swift and prompt in their actions, and we thank them. CLOSING NOTES: We would highly recommend the Hyatt Vivid Playa del Carmen for your vacation. Even though we had some minor concerns, they were far, far outweighed by the generosity, service, friendliness, and overall genuine ability of all the Vivid team to make our vacation everything we wanted it to be.
