The Pousada was built over 25 years ago in a part of the 16th century St Philips castle which was built on the orders of Philip II of Spain (later Philip I of Portugal) who employed the Italian military architect, Filipo Terzi. The fortress gives a commanding view across the sea and the surrounding countryside of the Serra da Arrabida, a mountain protecting the bay of Setubal and the mouth of the river Sado. Sao Felipe has a rambling layout on different levels.

High on a hill with 360° views. We were lucky enough to have a double aspect room with fabulous views. There were shutters to block out light and in high summer, heat. “Lovely Pousada”
Lovely Pousada on top of a hill with beautiful views. Helpful staff and good food. One night is probably enough to eat in. Setúbal has many good restaurants as an alternative.

“Perfect location and splendid view over the area - all the way to Lisbon”
A former convent is now the pousada here in Palmela. It lies next to the old castle. Free parking at the hotel. Friendly and informative reception. Rooms are quite big, and very big beds - but too hard for us (and most others I guess). A very quiet place and you wake up to a very nice buffet style… more
