Excellent value for money for our two week stay in room 807. It gave us views of the Atlantic and the sun in the afternoon and early evening. High rooms on the other side of the block have views of the sunrise, ocean and Funchal. We booked with TUI. We emailed the hotel before travelling ( web@dorisol.pt ) and they accommodated us requested. They say they can’t guarantee any requests but will try their best. The staff were warm, cheerful and helpful. The rooms cleaned and beds made every morning. Breakfast was great. Loads of fruit, cooked items including eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon and small sausages. Cold meats, peppers, pastries and yoghurt. Fresh bread to cut yourself. Varieties of teas,coffee and juice. Two great pools and terrace to catch the sun. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the Lido with bars and restaurants. Funchal bus stop is about half that distance. 1,2 or 4 takes you into town. Buy a card at any newsagents to load trips to reduce the price. Whilst there it was €2 each way bought whilst boarding but €1.35 if bought before travelling. In short, two weeks winter sunshine in a hotel that delivers what’s expected at a great price. It’s not Reids, but it doesn’t profess to be. It’s in our view, what we all want, great value for money with great staff.

Getting to the hotel was extremely easy on the Airport bus . It’s €6 one way or €10 return but must be used within a week . The stop number is 15 I received a warm welcome from Alexandra . I arrive early at about 11am . I was totally aware that check in was 3pm so there is no reason at all to kick up a fuss like some people are inclined to do . I just left my bag in reception and walked around Lido Area , went for a wine , walked around Pingo ( supermarket) and looked at trips available in the many travel agencies. I was in a high floor overlooking the port of Funchal which is actually what I asked for when I emailed my request to the hotel . The room is on the basic side and a tad outdated but it’s comfortable The door locks with a key ( rather than a card ) so as a solo lady traveller I did feel a tad uncomfortable with this at times . The kitchenette consists of a fridge , microwave and 2 hobs My balcony had the sun in the morning and shaded in the evening The room has no air conditioning, only a fan . The room was warm in April so I’m sure it would be like a sauna in July and august The pool area was ok . Lacked a bit of atmosphere so I would use the sister hotels’s pool . This one had a restaurant with lovely staff and great coffee . There was hardly any British folk in Buganville hotel so I used to go to VidaMar hotel . I used their pool area and chatted to lovely fellow Brits . Thank you VidaMar , you have a lovely hotel . Breakfast is served 07.30 to 10.30 Lovely coffee and fruit . However was disappointed to see bacon in the scramble eggs ( I’m vegetarian) But I loved the pastries and the potato croquettes. If you are vegan there is a vegan restaurant 1 min walk down the hill on right . All the bus stops are down the hill opposite Santander Bank Bus 1,2 and 4 will take you into Funchal for €2 I went on a lovely horse ride in the Levadas and taxi was €60 return Buses and taxis are good however I wished I rented a car. Parking at hotel is €7 a day Friendly , lovely island. I’d recommend and turn in a heartbeat

“Disappointed with accommodation ”

Great location staff lovely very helpful, hotel clean and rooms attended too daily. Breakfast was average but enough variety to choose from. The studio apartment was to small as we were a party of 3 Adults and was not fit for purpose for 3 adults. Overall we were unhappy with accommodtion.

We have mixed feelings about this hotel and the staff. We spent one week at the Bungavila Hotel at the end of October 2023. When we arrived at around 11:00 AM, after a long flight, we were met with hostility by the older woman on reception. We thought we could check in straight away, but were told check-in was at 3:00 PM, even though we were the only people arriving at that time. There was no welcome to Hotel Bungavila, we hope you enjoy your stay; no customer service, just an abrupt manner, which gives the hotel a really bad image. Overall, our first impression of the hotel was not at all good. Since this was our third visit to Madeira, we were able to look beyond the poor customer service of the older woman and take into account all the other positives from the hotel and our holiday. Other staff were very good. For example, Emanuel was absolutely brilliant! One lunchtime, he had approximately eight French visitors, who were extremely impatient. They were clearly in a hurry and had pre-booked their lunch. This meant that we had to wait over 35 minutes for our food to arrived, but Emanuel and another colleague were extremely courteous and handled the situation very well. A big shout out to Emanuel! We nominate him as hotel manager! Other staff who were very helpful and friendly include Tatiana, Sonia and Cesar. The food in the Terrace Restaurant was very good at lunchtimes. However, in the evening, the food was a little bland. I really enjoyed the salads and the fruit. We stayed in a room on the sixth floor. We had spectacular views of the mountain and the sea. Our room was clean and spacious. It had everything that we needed. I used the leisure facilities and was very happy with the jacuzzi and sauna. Overall, we enjoyed our holiday. We would recommend the hotel despite the customer service of one member of staff. We thought the hotel was good value for money and was in a good location. You could quite easily get to the centre of Funchal by bus or taxis. Equally, if you enjoy walking, it was a 30 minute leisurely stroll.
