Our second time at this hotel after several visits to its sister property, Baia Azul. Can't say enough positive things about it. Location is excellent, the staff are so friendly and bend over backwards to help and the style is on point throughout. We upgraded to the Deluxe Room this time which gave better sea views plus access to the spa. The spa is lovely, not heaps of facilities but all really modern and you can reserve a private hour daily so you have the Turkish bath, sauna and relaxation room to yourself. A really nice touch! We absolutely love the Baia Azul and, in our opinion, it does pip this one to the post just because the breakfast room and terrace is so gorgeous with views of the bay. But for everything else, Alto Lido is tiptop! A huge well done and thanks to all the team who made us and our mini Madeira lovers very welcome!

“Lovely hotel great service”

Beautiful hotel, great service in restaurant and bar with friendly staff. Lovely pool area on the roof. I would highly recommend this hotel not far from the centre of Funchal with free bus service three times a day there and back. We had a very good experience.

This is a nice hotel in a great location. Our room was not ready on arrival, so we were asked if we wanted to use the pool etc while we had the 1 hr wait - so we thought may as well make use of this. Receptionist on check in was quiet patronising! Our room was on the 9th floor with partial sea views and balcony, which was lovely and a great size. Pillows were not great at all.. The indoor pool is really nice and there is a nice outdoor pool and rooftop area. Carla in the spa reception is so lovely and one of the nicest people I have met- she was so welcoming an asset to the hotel. Shuttle bus at different times throughout the day to Funchal city centre which is great. Lots of nice places to eat/drink within walking distance in the area. Joanna was really helpful on reception at checkout and during stay when we needed help. Would recommend hotel.

“sorry but its the truth”

We travelled as two couples and stayed for two weeks . i have given 3 star as things are not quite right at this hotel . decor is perfect so is cleanliness and the breakfast is great for choice. We travelled as two couples and stayed for two weeks . i have given 3 star as things are not quite right at this hotel . decor is perfect so is cleanliness and the breakfast is great for choice. Also we enjoyed the entertainment . we all are over seventy but fit and able and have travelled a lot over the years s oi like to give a true review of what we experienced . Firstly welcome was not good no welcome drink and the receptionist could not understand us so we had to wait until next one was available When we asked questions we were told come back to morrow ! This was the problem for our holiday unless one particular person was on duty . No one smiles at reception or speaks when you pass by . They did store luggage before we left . Restaurant was like a cattle market with only one open there was never enough seats but staff tried their best. Also no information given when checked in about cost of evening meal or times or if lunch was available ( hotels loss ) No info given about free bus either . Entertainment was lovely with one bar person being smiley and friendly. drinks were quickly delivered and it was different every night . Housekeeping tried there best but when a cup gets smashed on bedroom floor and they don,t understand you so you phone reception and nothing was done either until we found the person who could understand. POOL The pool is freezing cold and was supposed to be heated so we used indoor pool everyday and sunbathed on roof terrace .MY COMPLAINT here was no information to tell us that pool bar area would be closed for varnishing floors and when it would be open again and no service to top floor of hotel . The workmen there helped us to find our way around to fathom out how to get drinks easier . Indoor pool was warm with a lovely area to sit which has to be used after having a massage to relax as no other room to go to we were told . OUR MAIN COMPLAINTWAS MADE TO JET 2 with a phone call on a Friday to highlight 2 of us were in the pool when cleaners came in with a extension reel that they put next to toilets , then walked back outside the pool to plug it in when it did not reach she pulled it and it rolled and stopped on the edge of the pool which if it had fallen in would have been a disaster . we got out and reported it to reception at spa who could not understand so that is why jet 2 were informed . They contacted manager who said he would check jet 2 got back to me in uk when we got home and said they had not heard anything and to this day nothing but they were concerned as safety is their priority . The spa reception were very frosty when i asked why i had to pay 1 euro every time i wanted to change a wet towel 4 star hotel should change for FREE . Communication is very bad all around this hotel we have been put off by this but know we should speak their language . But a smile and hello goes a long way in any kind of place which we always do BUT this hotel does not reciprocate and its lack of friendliness means we would not return . Obviously management could turn this around but we never saw them either ! area around hotel is flat and has places to eat with a small shopping centre to the left and uphill to get to it . ps the open top bus trip goes from across the road down some steps in front of hotel .
