We spent a week at this charming two-site hotel. It has lots of character having evolved over time from a traditional Madeiran farmhouse to a two-pool , two restaurant, complex with genuine identity. It's utterly in contrast with other huge faceless hotels in the area. We would certainly return - after all, which other hotel has a live falcon to stop pigeons pestering you at breakfast?

“Quinta Da Penha de Franca - an exceptional characterful boutique hotel in Funchal”

Ideally situated near the port. We stayed in the Quinta not the modern “da Mar” part of the hotel, although you can use the facilities, including restaurants and swimming pools of both. Room 68 on the second floor directly overlooks one of the swimming pool and beautiful colourful gardens, and looks out onto a lovely bay. The port is close by but could not be seen directly from the rooms. Cruise ships tended to arrive overnight and leave around 5pm. The room was very spacious with excellent ensuite facilities. It was very clean and serviced every day. Food was delicious. Breakfast had a large variety of cereals, cold meats and cheeses, and hot dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, and beans. Dinner had a set menu - 3 courses with two choices for each, and an excellent A La Carte menu including delicious local dishes and a good choice of seafood. Dining room staff were excellent, remembering wine choices etc from previous evenings. A hawk with its handler would appear at breakfast to shoo pigeons away from the outdoor breakfasting area. Ever opportunists the pigeons would peck for any crumbs! Reception staff were a great source of information not just about the hotel, but also regarding local bus routes, businesses and Funchal itself. In particular Linn was very helpful. Funchal is a charming town with quaint cobbled streets, wonderful cafes and restaurants. The Tea House in particular in a quiet square serves delicious snacks and a variety of teas. Local buses take people quickly to the Monte Tropical Gardens, Botanic Gardens and around Funchal and the surrounding area - 2 euros per journey. Highly recommended for the rapid skillful driving up and down the steep roads within the town!

“Good value Hotel close to Funchal Town Centre”

The location was up the hill approximately 15 mins walk to the centre of Funchal and the hotel was in a lovely quiet setting with a number of good restaurants close to the hotel. The location was up the hill approximately 15 mins walk to the centre of Funchal and the hotel was in a lovely quiet setting with a number of good restaurants close to the hotel. We stayed in a garden room with a terrace and it was spacious and looked like it had been recently refurbished. The staff were friendly and the hotel was clean and tidy. It was good value for money and was perfect for our 'city break' long weekend.

“In need of TLC”

Three star at most. Tired, soulless and in need of updating. Staff are lovely though.
