Quaint boutique hotel that captures and embodies the old Portuguese style heritage and architecture. The owner, Maria, has put a lot of care and time in restoring the property. This beautiful home has spectacular ocean views, large gathering spaces, a cozy breakfast area and a restored chapel. Maria is very accommodating to the needs of her guests at this unique and intimate hotel. If you are looking for modern or a Marriott-like hotel this is not for you. I mention this because some of the negative comments posted on this site clearly indicate that the guest expected a typical hotel which this place was never intended to be. However, if you are looking for a place where history was made and a king and queen graced its halls then this is quinta is for you. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Terceira. I would not hesitate to stay in this hotel in the future.

We are travelling as a couple as this is a stop off on a tour of 5 of the islands in the Azores. This quirky accommodation is located in an old country house, a short taxi ride from Angra do Heroismo in one direction and a 1.5km walk from Sao Mateus in the other. It’s an upmarket B&B rather than a hotel as the facilities are not the same as a hotel and it is run by a friendly, helpful but eccentric older lady. We very much agree with the other reviews on this site, that there is a feeling of great pride in the place that is not matched by guests experiences. The rooms and the en-suite bathrooms are small but adequate for a short stay. The beds are very firm and we had two singles pushed together but kept as single beds! Things to note; the place is old and the climate humid and there is a musty damp smell which pervades all the soft furnishings and carpeting, as if stuff has been washed but not adequately dried and in some places it is very strong! The lady owner must know this as they use a lot of scented candles in the public areas to hide it. However, our room and en-suite were very clean with no visible signs of damp or any other problems. Another quirky eccentricity is that you have to leave your key on the Reception desk when you leave the building. The keys are not electronic and everyone has access to them. Breakfast is good with plenty of choice, if you just want a continental breakfast. They also offer eggs and bacon and cook them to order.

We have mixed memories of our stay in this historic manor house which we found to be rather eccentric. The room décor is dated (although in keeping with the age of the building) and the rugs in the corridor appeared to be stained, as if cleaned but not dried properly. The owners are friendly enough but the property is run in a rather old-fashioned way, e.g. you leave your keys at the desk when you go out (and yes - they are left there so there is the potential for someone to take them); external doors are often still locked in the morning so you have to ask to go out to the pool and there is strict and complicated distribution of pool and beach towels. Our room was comfortable enough and had a (noisy) ceiling fan. Unfortunately, it did have a very strong smell of damp which hit us when entering the room. We had to throw open the bathroom window and back door (leading to a small private garden) in order to air the room each time we entered it. The property and its history is fascinating; we particularly enjoyed exploring the elegant reception rooms and gardens and the outdoor pool has a wonderful view of the coast. There is also a lovely private chapel in the grounds. Breakfast can be taken indoors or in the central courtyard and has the usual selection of coffee, teas, juices, cereals, fruit salad, sliced meats, yoghurt, rolls, local cheeses and cake and eggs and bacon can be ordered. There is a games room but we didn’t make use of this. Whilst it wasn't a total disaster, we wouldn't stay here again.
