If your idea of a great holiday is partying all evening and dancing until dawn, then this entire region is probably not for you... If you like to be in the countryside but within reach of civilisation, then this might be ideal! Obaya is a small hamlet 3km above Villaviciosa, approximately 600m from the very end of the road itself. The rental properties date from 2006 and are in excellent decorative and functional order. They look out over a quiet valley untroubled by motorway or indeed main road of any description, railway line or flight path. The only sounds at night are a tinkling stream in the bottom of the valley, and an occasional owl. Such spendid isolation doesn't come at the price of a difficult journey however - Villaviciosa is less than 10 minutes away and has all the amenities of a medium sized town (swimming pool, supermarkets, restaurants, bars, hairdressers, etc.) and the motorway is a further five minutes north of the town. From Obaya, the major town of Gijon is 30-45 minutes away, dependent on traffic conditions; within an hour you can be in the the Picos de Europa and in half that time you can be on any one of several quiet beaches, some suitable for surfing. The property we stayed in was scrupulously clean and well maintained; with tiled floors throughout as you would expect, and provided with a TV, oven / hob / grill, microwave, coffee maker and washing machine. A small individual gaetd terrace is immediately outside the front door, and there is plenty of parking for cars. The owners are very friendly and were keen to help, though they speak only a little English. The region of Asturias is the cider producing capital of Spain, with a sideline in dairy. It's very green, with rolling hills, bounded on the north by the Atlantic coast, with cliffs and sandy beaches, and to the south by the Picos de Europa, a spectacular limestone range rising to 1500m from the coastal plain. It's a countryside great for walking, cycling, hiking and outdoor pursuits. What tourism there is seems to be oriented towards the Spanish - don't expect fluent English in any but the most upmarket establishments.
