“Fabulous Room, Great Pools, Dining Experience Was Good and Bad”

I’ve just come back from a week all-inclusive stay at the BelleVue Resort in Alcudia. The hotel is a sprawling complex of 17 large blocks of rooms and apartments. It has 11 pools. So it’s massive. It’s at the end of a large lake, which you can walk round (wear mosquito repellent) and it is about 25 min flat walk down the strip to a beautiful icing sugar sandy beach that goes on for miles. The sea is usually calm and warm and waist deep for quite a long way out. There’s a long row of shops, bars and restaurants from the hotel complex to the beach. The hotel is showing its age. They are doing some work on it replacing the fire escapes, so it could be a bit noisy with the power tools and crane wagon. The Utility Company is digging up the road outside, so there was some construction noise and road closures, but I think they will soon be finished and it’s nothing to do with the hotel. My room was in the Minerva II block. I loved my room very much. It was clean and spacious with really comfy beds for a great nights sleep. It had a well equipped kitchen for self catering including fridge, microwave and hob with pans. My shower was excellent with good water pressure to wash all the sun tan lotion and sand off ready for the next day’s adventures. My balcony overlooked the shops, which at first I thought I might get kept awake, but I ended up enjoying watching the people going out for the evening and coming back having had a good time. It was very entertaining. There was no welcome pack, so I was unsure how you got the TV remote or operated the hob and air conditioning, and what the towel process was. Could I use them at the pool? I bought a cheap beach towel from a shop on the strip for €4 in the end which was great. The housekeeping service was patchy. There is a door hanger in the room which says “maid service please” which I left out twice all day and it was still there when I got in, in the evening. Then one time I didn’t leave it out because my room didn’t need cleaning and they came in and did the bed and bins. Over the course of the week they took all my towels away including the bath mat and left me with one towel for everything for the last two days. They also didn’t replenish the toilet roll supply so was down to the last few sheets on my last day. I know could have gone to reception and got more. There is a main reception building by the complex entrance and they were always super helpful when I had issues such as my room key stopped working, even though I was extra careful not to put it near my phone as it wipes it, I wasn’t careful enough, and my cooker hood wasn’t working because I didn’t know the switch to power it up looks like a light switch on the wall. They attended the same day to that, which was excellent service. The dining experience was really disappointing. The restaurant is a huge “Spanish Village” over a footbridge with hundreds of tables, but twice I timed it wrong and couldn’t get a table for breakfast or dinner. Go as early as possible, and you’ll likely get a table. The food was sometimes overcooked, especially the fish, the meat sometimes fatty, it was always very salty and greasy. It also wasn’t always hot. I liked the chicken curry, the paella, though I got a crabs arm in mine, and the Fideua was delicious. I’ve never had that pasta before. There was no hot drinks with the evening meal. I don’t know why. Sometimes the queue for the drinks machines were 10 long, and not all of them were working. I went to the Champions bar on the strip which did really good breakfast and served me to my table. I also ate out a couple of times which was always amazing. Eating out and cooking in my room is probably what I should have done in hindsight. The drinks were sound though, the beer was Amstel on tap, which was nice. I was surprised there wasn’t a Spanish beer available. The service from the pool bars was great. The snack bar at Leda did beefburgers, hot dogs, chicken nuggets and chips. It wasn’t very exciting but the service was very good. The chef called me darling, which I liked. The pools are brilliant, the one at Minerva I was my favourite, it was quiet usually when I was there and got the sun all day, with a breeze coming off the lake. They closed at just before 6 though, I presume because the lifeguard shift was finished. The toilet facilities at the pools was poor, only one working at both the pools I used with no lock on the door at one and nowhere to dry your hands. All said, Alcudia is beautiful, I loved it there, it’s well worth a visit. It has plenty to do, eat, drink and fabulous beaches to enjoy the sun, but I would make this hotel a reserve choice on your list.
