“Not sure what stank more, the room or the manager, Sonia’s attitude”

I had a bit of a bad experience with our room smelling of sewage which we spoke to reception who sent the cleaner up to the room who pretty much just sprayed the whole room with bleach. My partner was trying to explain to her that it was coming from the drains and maybe needed to be unblocked, to which she continued to spray every surface with bleach and not wash them off with water or anything. When we came back to the room after dinner the whole hotel room now smelt of very strong chemicals and it would have been unsafe to sleep in the room. When me and my partner went down to reception to complain about what had happened we spoke to the manager Sonia who was o credible unapologetic, she did not say sorry for the inconvenience once, was actually quite rude and treated us as if we were complaining about this to try and get a free room upgrade. No compensation was offered until the last evening when a different member of staff contacted me to offer a free dinner, by which point we were leaving the next day. However, other than our dealings with Sonia I do have to say this hotel was immaculate, the buffet food was the best buffet I have ever experienced. The activities offered were amazing and I was very impressed with the hotel itself.

3/5 Stars Having stayed seven times at Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora, where the service and facilities have  always been exceptional, we booked Meliá Cala Galdana expecting a similar five-star experience. The hotel's location is stunning, with beautiful views over Cala Galdana, and the staff have mostly been pleasant and welcoming, stars being Diego at the beach bar/restaurant  and Angel in the lobby bar who were exceptional. However, overall we feel the hotel falls short of what we expect from a five-star property. Our room was much smaller than anticipated and the tiny balcony unusable for most of the day and while modern and clean, it didn't have the luxurious feel we've experienced at other Meliá hotels. We were also surprised that the adults-only pool requires an additional charge, leaving only one main pool available to guests. For a five-star resort, this felt disappointing.  The main pool itself was also very disappointing. On a half-board package, only one restaurant was included, with all the other dining options requiring an additional payment. We appreciate that speciality restaurants often incur a supplement, but the overall choice felt limited.  The food was very average. It was also the little details that made the hotel feel less luxurious than expected. Tea was served with a saucer balancing on top of the teapot because there was no lid, milk came in a cup rather than a small jug and  tea/coffee/milk provided in rooms was very limited.  None of these issues is major on its own, but together they gave the impression that attention to detail was lacking. We still enjoyed our holiday thanks to the beautiful setting, but we left feeling that this hotel does not match the standard we've come to associate with Meliá's flagship five-star properties. It's an average hotel in a wonderful location, but in our opinion it offers more of a four-star experience than the luxury five-star experience we were expecting.

You pay for the view because the rest is pretty average. The building had many alterations resulting in claustrophobic staircases, long characterless corridors and awkward spaces. The coffee quality is pretty poor, it makes you wonder how a supposedly 5-star hotel can get away with serving such a low quality product. Restaurants onsite are overpriced, the breakfast buffet lacked finesse and the lobby was dated. Many staff avoided eye contact. The hotel is in a privileged location but overall it is hugely overpriced considering the product and standards of customer service.
