On this Winter Break with Brittany Ferries we had stayed in Portuguese Algarve, the Costa Del Sol, and now here on the Costa del Azahar . Benicarlo is not the "Spanish Costa's " that is often portrayed, rather this is a very Spanish area, without Tower Block Hotels and rows of bars showing football and full English everything. The immediate area, which is about 1 mile from the centre of Benicarlo, is mainly low raise apartment blocks. Els Romers is about a 5 minute walk to the beach, which is open and without rows of umbrellas and sunbeds (At least at this time of year). With generous parking and with the road between it and then beach the property has good kerb appeal -at least the white painted ones nearest the road do. Our apartment No 25 was a ground floor one bedroom unit to the rear just be the covered swimming pool (Heated when the sun shines). Inside was a good size living/dining room with "Solid Furniture" (Sofa not very comfortable) that needs more lighting. The oven is old and seems not to reach the set heat. The bedroom had a normal double bed with a soft but very comfortable mattress. The bathroom with shower over a bath was also a good size, with a very strong shower stream. A down side was that, until we asked for a standalone heater, the only source of heat/cols is a single outlet unit positioned above the bathroom door. Just how you keep cool in the summer must be difficult. A really good feature was the Internet which was fast enough for us to stream British TV channels (Easyview.eu). Although the owners get top marks for being helpful they could do things much better. For instance Brittany Ferries say that check-in is 16.00 hrs but the instruction in the window of the reception says 18.00. We arrived at 16.00 and struggled to make contact (As did another British couple who arrived some days after us). The provided towels were small and worn; there were no trash bags provided or instructions on trash disposal (You need to buy trash bags and place them in the street bins a little way from the site); only one starter toilet rool is provided; there are no instructions in the apartment on these and other needs. The TV in our apartment was easy to change the programme language to English where this was available while other sets were not. If this seems a load of moans, its not meant to be. Its just frustrating that with a little more effort these apartments could offer a much improved experience. This is a different area of Spain for us and proved a good option, however having our car with us really helped.

Extremely clean and family friendly. The location is ideal because it is far yet close enough from the tourist-bustling Peniscola. The apartment deco is very basic and nothing fancy but it is well equipped. The only thing lacking are large bath towels. Fortunately, we brought ours from home after reading the booking site reviews (mostly all positive). This place is also pet-friendly. The pools are clean and well maintained as well as the common areas. I would definitely stay here again (despite occasional yapping dogs in the middle of the night). In addition, the area has a lot of things to do and see throughout the year. I would have given it a 5 but for the small towels and outdated decors, but everything is impeccably clean!!! English is not spoken here, French and Spanish only. Mostly Spanish and some French tourists.

Check in time requests are ignored, on arrival it seems that you are expected to phone a number and repeat the request that had already been made and acknowledged by email, eventually someone will turn up and actually do what they had already agreed to. The biggest complaint, and something that is very misleading is the Booking.com listing showing this place as being BEACHSIDE, it very definitely is no such thing, there is a walk of about 50 metres to a busy road, there is then a row of houses between that road and the beach, another 75 metres or so. The units themselves are very basic and the kitchen poorly equipped. No kettle and no sign of the listed coffee machine.
