Fantastic hotel! The animation team are fantastic, lots of entertainment. There is something for everyone. The fire show was amazing and the foam party in the pool was great. The crazy train was a fun afternoon out!

We stayed at the Phenicia Hotel in Hammamet and, overall, I think it’s a good hotel for the price. The hotel is clean and well maintained, and the beach is one of its biggest strengths. Even though we visited in July, which is peak season, the beach never felt overcrowded. The rooms are a little dated, but they were always clean and comfortable, and we had a nice balcony. The internet is also very good and works around the whole hotel including at the beach. The restaurant is well organised. you’re assigned the same table and therefore the waiter throughout your stay. We really liked this because our waiter got to know us, and our bottle of wine and water were usually waiting for us when we arrived, making dinner feel more personal. Another big positive is the adults-only pool. As this isn’t an adults-only hotel, it’s nice to have a quieter space away from the children when you want to relax. The entertainment team does a great job. There are plenty of activities during the day, but they’re never pushy, so you can join in if you want or simply relax. There are evening shows on most nights, with one night off each week. We loved the pool party, it was super fun! Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. The reception bar was definitely the best bar in the hotel, offering a wide cocktail menu compared with the other bars. However, the spirits available are still fairly basic, so don’t expect options like amaretto, Malibu, flavoured gins or flavoured vodkas. Most cocktails are made using the standard house spirits but still a very big variety of drinks and cocktails. There were a few downsides, though. While there are several bars around the hotel, most of them only serve soft drinks, beer, wine and a very limited cocktail menu. If you want the full range of cocktails (for example a Pina colada), you have to walk all the way to the reception bar, which isn’t very convenient when you’re spending the day by the pool or on the beach. The pools also close at 6 pm, the staff would go around asking people to leave the pool which felt far too early, especially when there was still plenty of sunshine left. At the same time, staff start collecting the sunbed mattresses, meaning you have to get off them so they can be stored away, and then collect a new one the following morning. At breakfast, the hotel sometimes seemed a little short-staffed. The queues for freshly cooked items like pancakes and omelettes could be very long, so it’s worth allowing extra time if you want those. Although the meal times themselves are generous, the hotel is very strict about them. Staff begin clearing away food as the end of each service approaches, sometimes even a little beforehand. For example, freshly cooked breakfast items such as pancakes, omelettes and waffles may stop being served before breakfast officially ends. The same applies at lunch and dinner, with food being cleared away promptly as soon as service finishes. It wasn’t a major issue, but it’s worth arriving with plenty of time rather than leaving it until the last few minutes. The location is also a plus. It’s easy and inexpensive to get a taxi to the Medina and other nearby attractions. There js also a shop where you buy souvenirs, a few extra snacks like chocolate, sweets, crisps etc. some swimwear and inflatables. Overall, I’d recommend the Phenicia Hotel if you’re looking for good value for money. It isn’t a luxury five-star experience, and there are a few areas that could be improved, but it’s clean, has a lovely beach, good entertainment, friendly staff and enough facilities to make for an enjoyable holiday.

We arrived in the evening and the hotel held dinner open for us before service ended — a small touch but really appreciated after a travel day with kids. Rooms: Two rooms on the top floor with ocean views. Spacious and cleaned to a high standard throughout our stay. The décor is dated and due a refurbishment, but beds were comfortable and doors lock securely — nothing went missing during our stay. Bathroom has a bath rather than a shower, and water pressure is weak. Towels were clean but on the small side. Pools: Good-sized main pool with plenty of sunbeds — though good luck grabbing one after 9:30am unless you know someone! There’s an indoor/outdoor pool reserved strictly for 16+ (they enforce this properly), plus a jacuzzi pool that’s always lively. Food: Excellent, and huge variety across the board. Breakfast had plenty of choice. Our top tip: eat lunch on the beach — barbecue, shawarma and burgers were all delicious, plus free ice cream. Dinner offered a different spread each night, and snacks were available all day. Drinks were plentiful, though the alcoholic ones are noticeably watered down. Entertainment: The team worked hard from morning until 11pm, six days a week (Mondays off) — daytime activities included aqua aerobics, handball and archery, with karaoke and live dance shows at night. Tunisia Day was a real highlight: fireworks, a fire show, and a night-time pool party that the whole family loved. Excursions: Booked two through the hotel. The “Crazy Train” trip (genuinely crazy) included a stop at the medina — be on your guard here, scams are common. Keep any wristband covered, and don’t let anyone put a lizard or parrot on you unless you want to pay for the privilege — they will chase you for the money. The boat trip, on the other hand, was fantastic and highly recommended. Spa: Treated myself to a deep tissue massage — reasonably priced — then relaxed in the swim-up pool with a book afterwards. Practical tips: Bring your own big cups for poolside drinks Bring your own beach towels if you can No cash machine on-site — the neighbouring Steigenberger has one, but be aware it caters to a specific clientele and you may not feel especially welcome there if you’re not a guest Tunisia restricts taking local currency out of the country, so only convert what you’ll spend Staff shoutouts: Najet in housekeeping was excellent and kind throughout. The entertainment team — Eya, Killar, Mohamed and Snoopy — were brilliant. Huge thanks also to the guys managing the sunbeds. Overall a great family stay — food and entertainment were the standout, rooms need modernising but were clean and comfortable. Would return
