Konya

Cradle of the dervishes

This conservative city located in the region of Central Anatolia combines its important historical relevance with the fact of being at present a city in the midst of an economic boom. Konya, Was the capital of the Seleucid Turks between the 12th and 13th centuries, where the mystical philosopher and poet, Mevlana Calaleddin, founded the Sufí order, known nowadays as the Whirling Dervishes, who express the Rumí philosophy through a dance, seeking for perfection and spiritual balance by spinning their body in circles. Visit the convent of the Surfi order, as well to the Museum that pays tribute to Mevlana (our guide), as he is known by his disciples, without forgetting the Divrigi Mosque.

Without any doubt the main reason to discover Konya is the Museum/Mausoleum of Mevlana; its items and manuscripts dedicated to the Dervishes and mysticism of their order, the interior decoration with bright green tiles. A genuine gem that takes you back in time and which may be considered more as a shrine than a museum. In addition to the mausoleum , another attractive site in this city is the Divrigi Mosque, whose ancient stone doors filled with lavish and complex reliefs (rilievo) make more than one visitor believe in God’s existence; a piece of art listed as World Heritage Site by the Unesco.
