Puerto del Carmen: Magic coastline

There are many reasons to visit Puerto del Carmen, a lovely fishing town in Tías, named after the sailors’ Patron Saint. It is located at only 10 minutes from the airport of Lanzarote and 12 minutes from the capital, Arrecife. Puerto del Carmen captivates its visitors with its six kilometres of never-ending   golden beaches, with fanciful “calas” formed by volcanic eruptions occurred many years ago. It is an ideal destination for families and also for young people,  as well as for romantic weekends. Its idyllic coastlines offer great entertainment like Matagorda, Pocillos and Playa Grande, all known for their excellence and Blue Flag, ideal for practicing wind-surf , fishing, scuba diving...

Puerto del Carmen is equipped with the best installations and offers a varied selection of hotels and entertainment, preserving its marine essence; since the opening of the first hotels in the 60’s it coexists with the hustle and bustle of a booming tourist destination famous for its lively night life. Walking along the Avenida de las Playas, the main street with a beautiful view of the sea, and the picturesque Varadero, with its charismatic fishing dock, you will discover a village full of history and legend.  At 5 km. you will find the Museo Casa José Saramago, a genius of Spanish literature.

Puerto del Carmen: Magic coastline

Los Jameos del Agua

Los Jameos del Agua, like the Los Verdes Cave, are located inside the volcanic tunnel created by the eruption of La Corona Volcano over 3.000 years ago. It is one of island's most symbolic places and is known as César Manrique's first work in Lanzarote (1968), for the volcanic formatios and its natural beauty.

It owes its name to the existence of an internal lake made up of at least three jameos or openings in the ground: the Jameo Chico, which gives access to the interior; the Jameo Grande; and a third, known as the Jameo de la Cazuela. Next to the Jameos you will find Casa de los Volcanos, a museum dedicated to vulcanology and an investigation centre.

DISCOVER A NATURAL GEM

After passing through a small entrance, you will descend an clever spiral staircase made of volcanic rock and wood, that allows us to discover, little by little from the top, the first stop: the Jameo Chico. In this space, you will notice abundant vegetation. Following the same staircase you will reach Jameo Grande, a singular space 100 metres long and 30 metres wide. It has a beautiful garden and a large swimming pool designed by César Manrique.

Perfectly built in the landscape you will find two bars, a dance floor and a concert hall with great acoustics integrated in the volcanic cave. It is the perfect place for concerts, plays and ballet.

LOS JAMEITOS, A SYMBOL

In between the two Jameos you will find a natural salt-watered lake and amazing crystal clear waters, as well as more than a dozen different species such as Jameitos or blind crabs  (Munidopsis polymorpha). This species is blind and albino after living for milleniums inside the volcanic grottoe.

Cactus Garden

In spite of the 5.000 square metres, you will find an organised garden perfectly fitted in the agricultural environment of Guatiza, in the town of Teguise.

César Manrique's creative inventiveness transformed an old volcanic ash quarry into an interesting cactus garden with over 7.200 specimen of 1.100 different species from the Canaries and countries such as Peru, Mexico, Chile, United States, Kenia, Tanzania and Morrocco.

In the top part of the garden you will find an old windill, restored and transformed into a restaurant by Manrique.

DID YOU KNOW

Guatiza was of great economic importance during the 19th century thanks to the prickly pear plantations. For decades the pigmentation was used as a dye for textiles or carmine.

Monumento al campesino

You will find the monument in Lanzarote's geographical centre, in a signficant crossroads from where you can access any place on the island. It is exactly at this point where you can see several outstanding agricultural images: La Guería and enarenados del Jable.

César Manrique chose an exceptional location to exhibit one of his most symbolic work: Casa-Museo del Campesino y Monumento a la Fecundidad (1968)

Fecundidad stands out isolated, over the horizon, a 15 metre sculpture dedicated to the local peasant. Inside, you can observe several objects and tools related to the islander culture and agriculture.

Monumento al campesino

Timanfaya is one of the best lanscapes of Lanzarote. In the 18th and 19th century, after the volcanic eruptions, Lanzarote's landscape changed forever. Ever since that moment a quarter of its territory remained buried under a thick layer of ashes and sea of lava.

The result of this is a breathtaking landscape with remarkable reliefs, protected since 1974 under the National Park distinction.

VOLCANO ROUTE

We recommend following the Ruta de los Volcanos (Volcano Route) or Montañas del Fuego. 14 kilometres that have been prepared for visitors to enjoy this special location through roads that are perfectly fitted in the environment and designed by César Manrique and Jesús Soto.

Walking around the craters or on a dromedary are always a unique experience to enjoy an unforgettable holiday. Along the journey you will be able to see what vulcanologists call geothermical faults, that produce unusual temperatures on the surface.

During the journey, on the islote de Hilario, you can find a restaurant-viewpoint El Diablo, designed by Manrique.

A paradise under the Atlantic Ocean

Besides the emerged richness, Lanzarote hides another island full of life under the Atlantic Ocean.  For Sea life lovers, shipwrecks, and thrilling emotions, Lazarote offers interesting submarine routes that will let you enjoy this island beyond firm ground, finding unspoilt areas of natural beauty. Go for this new world! You will experience the weightless feeling and serene freedom under the deep blue ocean.  With its more than 100 diving points catalogued, few people can say they fully know this submarine territory. During your journey you will find groupers, turtles, stingrays, dolphins and even finback and sperm whales.  Keep calm, the marine species in Lanzarote; as in the rest of the Canary Islands’, are quiet and harmless. So if you come across an angel fish, an enormous grouper or even a great hammerhead, this will not be a reason to be alert, but to be excited for being so lucky! Happy dive!

The trace of José Saramago

The people from Tías are tied forever to a great and universal Portuguese writer, the brilliant José Saramago (Portugal 1922-Lanzarote 2010). Awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998 for his literary career, he chose this small town of the island of Lanzarote to take up exile due to a serious conflict with the Portuguese Goverment, after publishing his literary work El Evangelio según Jesucristo. Since then he got actively involved in Lanzarote’s day-to-day, where he died in 2010. His peculiar view of its customs and traditions is reflected in his Cuadernos de Lanzarote. Visit the house where he spent the last 18 years of his life and where he wrote his last books, nowadays transformed into the Museo Casa José Saramago which will allow you to get a closer view of the universe of this genius.
