“Good hotel, well located, but excessive smoking spoilt the rooftop for us”

We got off to a bad start with the pre-booked airport to hotel transport. I found my name on a printed sign stuck to the arrivals siding wall and introduced myself to the driver. He grunted, snatched the sign and walked off, gesturing for us to follow. No offer to take a suitcase and not a word as he marched to the vehicle. Our friend arrived later that night and experienced the same surly rudeness with the transport man. The rest of the staff were pleasant and helpful. The hotel is well located and is a very nice building. There were lots of good food options in each direction nearby, and it was an easy walk to the city centre square. Our business suite room was huge with a separate lounge area and a lovely, large, comfortable bed. The bathroom was very modern, stylish and beautifully clean with lovely new stone tiles. We had a massage one day and the room was nice and the masseur very good. We had a corner room with two balconies, but even though the glass balcony doors were double glazed, the traffic noise from the busy road below was horribly loud. Our friend did not have a balcony, just a room with windows, and her room was nice and quiet, so something seems to have gone wrong in the building process with the balcony doors. It spoilt an otherwise lovely room. The included breakfast was reasonably good. The coffee was not great and the hot food ran out quickly and did not seem to be replenished. The internet was very patchy. The excessive smoking, which is normal in Albania, does have a negative impact on those of us who have smoking regulations at home which allow us to enjoy our meals smoke free. I had expected the rooftop bar and pool to be a highlight of the hotel for us when I booked but when you arrive on the rooftop, you have to walk through a wall of smoke. Technically there is no smoking indoors, but the outdoor/indoor area is so closely connected that it is impossible to avoid the smoke. We would love to sit outdoors and enjoy the view and fresh air, but in Albania, we end up choosing indoor tables to attempt to avoid the excessive smoke but even the indoor area of the rooftop bar is full of smoke. The bar staff themselves stand just outside the indoor bar area and smoke. The sun lounges are on a mezzanine level above the pool that was not appealing, with a dirty disused section attached to it - not to standard for a 4 star hotel. I don’t think I ever entered or exited the ground entrance of the hotel without passing a staff member or two standing out the front smoking. Despite these issues, we had a great stay and given the price range and current smoking culture in Albania, one cannot probably expect more.
