I deleted my previous review complaining about the lack of help from Reception when the hotel's website inexplicably wouldn't take my card after several years of there being no problem with booking online or over the phone with The Great Southern. It was annoying at the time but the hotel itself is always comfortable, convenient and cosy to stay in. Our stay on the 17 of January was no exception to this. The breakfast deals are good value, our room was clean and very spacious and the shower was hot. I do recommend The Great Southern to everyone. I love the Art Deco touches and its proximity to Central Station.

We had a great stay here a few weeks ago. Rooms were clean and a decent size. Showers and aircon worked well. We did have one issue where a guest was making a lot of noise in the corridor in the early hours of the morning. We called down to reception and they were on it straight away which we were very grateful for! The hotel do a fantastic breakfast either cooked or continental for a very reasonable price, all the staff were very friendly and helpful. We were able to store our luggage at the hotel whilst we went out on the day we were checking out which was really helpful too. The hotel is in China town and in walking distance of lots to do, we also had the train opposite the hotel too which was really handy (the train stop is Haymarket) we would definitely return to this hotel.

“Excellent value and comfort in a great location!”

We live in Canberra and always stay overnight at the Great Southern before a cruise which leaves from Sydney. It is consistently good value, with everything we need, including a comfortable bed and a decent shower! The location is ideal, as we can walk to it from the train on arrival. There are numerous restaurants and eateries of all kinds within a few minutes walk, but we usually dine in, because the food is excellent at a very reasonable price. The only problem can be the serving size; it is often too much, unless you are very hungry! Breakfast is also great, with a continental breakfast, or a cooked breakfast with unlimited access to the continental selection, which includes unlimited juices, tea and coffee. Frankly, after the cooked breakfast (my favourite) with juice, I have no room for anything more than toast and coffee! You will be pleasantly surprised by how low the breakfast prices are! Just buy your ticket at reception first. Drinks from the bar are also reasonably priced, and can be consumed at the street side tables, if you enjoy people watching. The rooms are very comfortable, with all the normal inclusions, including a bar fridge, but no minibar. (Enjoy your 'drinks' downstairs before retiring for the evening.) Coffee and tea are available in the room. We usually buy some soft drinks from one of the local convenience shops to put in the fridge. We used to buy snacks too, but no longer bother, as we are quite replete after dinner in the dining room! Some rooms are just that with a bathroom, but we have sometimes been upgraded to a mini-suite, with a sitting-room as well. I recommend asking about these if having a longer stay. This is not a luxury hotel, nor does it pretend to be, but has everything we want with good service and excellent value in accommodation, victuals, and drinks. Compare with the prices of some other central venues!
