In a city overflowing with luxury hotels, surviving. let alone thriving, takes more than marble lobbies & fancy chandeliers. It requires great design, the right location, impeccable timing… & above all, the right people. Sofitel Sydney Wentworth certainly has history on its side. Opened in 1966 as Australia’s first international 5star hotel, it has welcomed royalty, celebrities & world leaders through its doors. Better still, it’s perfectly positioned in the beating heart of Sydney CBD, just a pleasant stroll from Circular Quay. As an Accor Platinum member on my first visit, I headed straight to Level 5 for Club Millésime late 7pm check-in. Disha gave us a wonderfully warm welcome, while Guest Experience Mgr Emma also made a quick appearance. We were delighted with a room upgrade, thoughtful welcome amenities & a seamless arrival. From evening canapés to settling into our spacious room, the first impression felt genuinely magical. Breakfast is served at Delta Rue, the hotel’s lively Vietnamese-French restaurant opposite Club Millésime. On weekends it becomes very popular, with seating spilling onto the terrace, so arriving before 8:30am is recommended unless queueing happens to be your favourite breakfast activity. The buffet offers a generous mix of Western favourites & Asian comfort food, from congee & dumplings to excellent pastries. The real highlight, however, was one outstanding young waitress. She welcomed us warmly, explained the buffet, took our coffee, tea & egg orders, & the following morning remembered not only us, but exactly where we sat, how we liked our coffees & even our varied egg orders. Friendly service is lovely. Remembering your guests? That’s hospitality at its finest. Although the hotel doesn’t have a swimming pool, it compensates brilliantly with SOHO, an impressive 24/7 gym featuring modern equipment, Pilates facilities, massage chairs (which quickly became my second home), & Recovery—a wellness sanctuary with infrared & dry saunas, cold plunges, ice baths & Arctic showers. Frankly, after a 30min massage chair session, I briefly considered extending my stay purely for “medical reasons.” Club Millésime itself is beautifully designed, stretching across the main lounge, Velvet Room, bar area & even opening the boardroom when demand requires. Unfortunately, that’s also where the cracks begin to appear. During busy weekends, the lounge seems to operate on optimism rather than staffing levels. On Sat morning, after breakfast at Delta Rue, we wandered into Club Millésime for coffee & a light breakfast. After checking in, guests are left to hunt for available tables themselves. We found a clean table but waited several minutes without cutlery, acknowledgement or anyone taking our order. A waitress glanced at us before walking away. Being busy is understandable; pretending invisible guests don’t exist is a rather more adventurous service philosophy. When I politely asked whether someone could take our order, I was informed that our table wasn’t in her section, but since I’d interrupted her, what did we want she ask? I was momentarily tempted to apologise for accidentally sitting outside her sovereign territory! Eventually we ordered an egg white omelette & a waffle. The omelette was perfectly pleasant. The waffle, however, was a masterclass in how appearances can deceive. It looked beautiful but arrived dry enough to make me wonder whether it had enjoyed a previous life inside supermarket packaging. For a French-inspired Sofitel breakfast, I was expecting “ooh la la”, not “oh… that’s bad.” Sat evening’s canapé service was equally hectic. The lounge felt less like an executive retreat & more like peak hour at a busy Asian wet market. Staff worked incredibly hard & food was replenished promptly, but there simply weren’t enough of them. 40min after we sat down, I’d finished my first drink while my partner was still waiting for his first! Raising the drinks menu eventually became an endurance sport, followed by waving it in the air like I was trying to guide aircraft onto a runway! The canapé selection itself was average, & somewhat underwhelming for Sofitel standards. BBQ chicken wings, steamed vegetables & pulled beef ribs which replaced chicken wings later were ordinary, not quite the refined French-inspired experience one might expect. To be fair, whenever the hotel wasn’t overwhelmed, everything flowed beautifully. The team clearly knows how to deliver exceptional hospitality when they have the capacity to do so. One final hiccup involved turndown service. Each evening, a small praline was left beside the tea station, a simple gesture I genuinely looked forward to with my bedtime cup of tea. On the second night it was missing, so I called housekeeping around 7:45pm. After waiting over an hour, I called again. The chocolate eventually arrived after 9pm. I never imagined I’d have to launch a missing-person investigation for a single praline. Sofitel Sydney Wentworth gets so many things right. The history, the location, the facilities & many of its people are genuinely impressive. But too often, even the simplest request seemed to disappear into a black hole. A 5star hotel shouldn’t require guests to chase housekeeping, hunt for service or wave menus like distress signals. Luxury isn’t defined by chandeliers, marble or designer furniture. It’s measured by effortless service, thoughtful anticipation & making guests feel genuinely cared for. Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has all the ingredients to be exceptional. It simply needs enough people to bring that recipe to life.
