The Rocks Resort

I met an old friend from London whom I hadn’t seen for sometime, we spent 2 nights at the resort which was fabulous. We had a lovely 2 bedroom apartment with amazing views. The pool area was also wonderful. Judy and the staff were lovely and made our stay very welcoming. Thank you all.

Buckle up, this is a long one. This has been a once in a lifetime experience. I encourage you to continue reading, you won’t be disappointed. This is the story of a Grandma (I call her Grams) from NSW who travelled with her 21 y/o granddaughter (the writer of this story) to Brisbane to look after her 16 y/o granddaughter (while her mum was away on a well deserved holiday). It’s important to note that we had a theme song for this trip: ’Smooth’ by Santana feat. Rob Thomas. Now, it all started when we arrived in Brisbane and the weather was about a million degrees to us NSW folk. We decided to go along the coast and stay at a nice resort for the weekend. After searching many different places, we found the Rocks Resort in Currumbin. We had never been before and decided to give it a go. Now, I feel I have to let you know that my Grams is frugal. She volunteers at an Op Shop, and the summer dresses she packed for this trip were all from there. When we arrived, naturally my Grams shared all the things I’ve just told you with Joel at the front desk. We were shown to our room, and as we were taking in the view, there was a knock at the door. Who could that be? It was a joyful woman, Judy, who asked us if we’d like to be upgraded to the penthouse. The. Penthouse. When does that ever happen!? My 75 y/o Grams said, “I’ve never been upgraded before,” and had no idea how it worked, asking how much extra the cost would be. She was shocked to find out there was no extra cost. Bless her. Upon entering the penthouse, my Grams was moved to tears. She even called Joel to say “Joel, I love you”. There are no words to describe the feeling. Apartment 11A had views of the coast from everywhere you stood. And the bathroom deserves its own moment. Incredible. We did everything. We swam in the ocean and the pool (it’s lit up blue at night, which my Grams particularly enjoyed. She said, “It makes your bubbles turn blue” excitedly as she passed me her goggles to see). We went to the surf club where, without fail, at each lunch and dinner we got milkshakes. I kid you not, as we sat there slurping away, ‘Smooth’ by Santana started playing on the speakers. My not so tech savvy Grams thought I had orchestrated that because I’d happened to be on my phone in that moment, but it was just meant to be. We went to the local markets on Friday night, and there was a live singer with, would you believe, the same name as my Grams: Sharon Lee. And of course, they shared a song together, as my Grams is everyone’s biggest cheerleader. We even bought a lotto ticket, promising that if we won we’d buy an apartment there. We didn’t win, but we did win the money we spent on it back, so I consider that a win. Everything felt perfect. It felt like we were in a movie. We even decided to stay another night. We are so eternally grateful to Joel and Judy for the kindness they showed to all of us, especially my Grams. It was a truly magical experience, and we thank everyone involved from the bottom of our hearts. As we checked out and drove away, there was only one thing left to say: “Hey Siri, play ‘Smooth’ by Santana.”
