I had occasion to attend the 50th wedding anniversary function of my best school friend and his wife on the Gold Coast in Queensland in March 2025. While I live in Brisbane, just 90 kilometres away from West Burleigh, where the function was taking place, I saw it as more convenient to take a couple of days away from home and stay in a hotel at a suitable location on the Gold Coast. This would save my having to leave early from Brisbane to get to the lunchtime function and then afterwards get back home the same day. I searched the Internet at great length and was quite amazed at how the prices for Gold Coast hotel accommodation have soared over the past few years and so I was looking for a simple value for money place to serve my needs that was also relatively accessible to the function venue. I came across the Red Star Hotel at Palm Beach which ticked all the boxes for my purpose. It turned out to be a great choice overall, as the place, whilst not luxury was nevertheless very comfortable and had all the facilities I needed to enjoy a short break away from the Brisbane hustle and bustle. I chose to get to and from the place by public transport which is excellent here. I took a Translink electric train to Varsity Lakes Railway Station where I then boarded a local bus (route 760) which took me within 250 metres short walk from the Red Star. To begin with, I met the friendly hotel manager at Reception and was given the key to my unit. I was given a second floor unit which required me to climb up a set of concrete stairs at the back of the complex to get to the landing that was in front of my unit. A word of warning, however, for travellers of my age (over 70) – you do need to negotiate these steps with the utmost of care to avoid a possible fall. My having observed such due care I am happy to report that I avoided that happening. The unit is very much motel style and contained two large comfortable beds (obviously good for families or two couples), a long eating and writing bench connected to the wall together with two simple small stools, a television and a unit which housed a bar fridge, a microwave and the tea and coffee making facility. During my stay I was able to use the microwave to heat up 'ready to go' take away meals. I did need to consult with the manager regarding the microwave instructions – and she was ever so helpful in sorting all that out for me. I found the small stools a bit difficult to sit on and would have preferred a more conventional chair in the room – but it was OK, I coped. There was thought given to the placement of the electric switches beside the beds making it easy in my case, to work my sleep machine. The unit has a verandah which overlooks the swimming pool area. The bathroom was a real space saver with a small open wardrobe located there instead of in the main bedroom. Above the hanging space in the wardrobe was a small alcove housing an iron and a very neat small folding ironing board. The shower was efficient with loads of hot water that did not run out and I liked the large circular mirror above the wash basin. A good bonus was that the plug in the basin worked well and retained all the water – much appreciated when trying to have a shave. The outstanding bonus of this place was its well landscaped and fenced swimming pool incorporating a separate spa. I did enjoy a very pleasant time late one afternoon when the sun went down enjoying in particular the relaxing spa. The swimming pool to my mind is the centrepiece of the establishment and well worth frequenting, particularly for young families. The whole place is well fenced and looks inviting from the street and looks clean and tidy. Its location is excellent being in reasonable walking distance to a patrolled beach, shops and eating places. As well, most of the Gold Coast tourist attractions are accessible by Gold Coast’s excellent bus routes, with two bus stops nearby. I am so pleased that I chose this place for accommodation to attend my friend’s special occasion. It more than met my needs.
