the location is near the station of the airport drop off. hotel have a homey feel to it. the old man who was always around is very friendly and always make small talk with us. when we arrived though nobody was manning the reception, no bell and not an instruction for such a situation. our room size is just enough for us. there is a generous amount of good coffee and tea in the room. aside from a kettle there is a coffee plunger available too. light in the toilet is so dimmed and no light in the vanity that it is difficult to shave and see yourself. our bed covers and pillowcases were not changed for the whole duration even if we requested for our room to be made. there was even a day that our bin was not emptied. cups was not washed or replaced. the breakfast served is the same throughout our 9 days stay. egg, bacon, french toast and bread. the coffee is good though. outside there are available small restaurants but seems does not open early overall good value for money as it is just a walk or free tram away to places we want to see

Due to the Formular I Race ,I was battling to find one night's accomodation in the CBD for a short business trip. On a random on line search I found the Hotel Sophia ,a mere 6 minute walk from the Skybus terminus and at a reasonable rate. The hotel is located in an elegant old style building with a distinctive" old Europe" flair. In light of the race ,I could only secure an economy class room which whilst small, was freshly painted and spotless. I had no issue with the hum of traffic on King Street and was pleased to be able to open the window to catch the evening breeze! My stay concluded with a great value breakfast. The receptionist Mayura was welcoming and courteous on my arrival whilst night manager Paul gave me good advice on travel options and pubs nearby to visit. The only minor issue was a difficulty to contact the hotel by phone to confirm the check in and our times. Give this hotel a try- you will not be disappointed!

I used to stay there regularly pre Covid as I was working in Melbourne during the week. I liked the quirky feel of the place and the family and staff that ran it (to varying degrees of ability). I chose to stay on a recent visit to Melbourne. Due to my own error I made a double booking but getting a refund has been (and remains) a nightmare. When I was there I "started" the process with the Chinese Manager. She was uncooperative and kept giving excuses plus bad advice as to refund process. Since then I have emailed regulary to enquire as to process - not even a simple acknowledgment A good cheap, clean hotel ruined by poor management.
