We spent a wonderful week at this charming hotel. We stayed in the Grand Hotel loft apartment on the top floor which was cosy but spacious, well equiped, fantastic views of the mountains, a wonderful wrap-around balcony, living area with kitchen, seating and wood burning fireplace, luxurious bed and bathrooms - perfect for us. The hotel facilities are great with a lovely spa, heated outdoor pool, hot tub, garden sauna, great ski lockers opened with your keycard, gym, nice bar and restaurant area, plus you can use the restaurants and bar at the 5-start hotel over the road. Food was very good - breakfast pretty much perfect with a comprehensive buffet, but also freshly cooked eggs, porridge, waffles, pancakes etc to order, freshly squeezed juice, leaf tea served in a pot - fantastic. This is the best way to organise breakfast in my opinion, and the only problem was trying not to over eat! We ate in the hotel restaurant three times in the evening, every meal was good - the multi-course menu with wine pairings, which changes every day, was really good quality and the wines were top notch. The a la carte menu was also good - a bit limited on choice for the starters, I would have liked to see some fish or seafood here, but a good selection of mains including a juicy ribeye steak which i hugely enjoyed on our last night. There's a nice bar area with comfy seating, and they have great local beer which is served perfectly - so good after a day on the slopes. The Zillertal ski area is huge with superb skiing in numerous resorts all covered by one pass - we were lucky with a big dump of snow on arrival and amazing conditions for early April. We enjoyed all the different ski areas which provided varied terrain suitable for all levels, with modern lifts and good mountain restaurants. We drove up to the Hintertux glacier on the last day as the weather warmed, which provides spectacular views down the valley and great high-altitude skiing. Zell Am Ziller is a small, quiet town - don't expect any lively apres-ski or nightlife, and there are just a handful of restaurants which are mostly attached to hotels. We had a good pizza out one night, and a nice lunch at another hotel restaurant on our first day. Of course, Mayrhofen is a short distance up the valley for plentiful nightlife and restaurants, so it's all good. There's a big Spar supermarket near the hotel, and a smaller (but better in our opinion) Billa market in the town, so easy to buy provisions and cook in the apartment, which we did a few times making a nice change from restaurants. Service throughout the stay was great, no issues at all - everyone was friendly and helpful. Overall a brilliant holiday in a really lovely hotel - highly recommended.

“Doesn't Get Any Better”

The finest hotel experience I have ever had in my life. The guests are treated like royalty, the rooms are beyond beautiful and the amenities beyond belief. Well worth the cost of the room and I recommend this hotel highly.

There is a lot to like about this hotel, but some improvements could be made. The hotel is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection, but a few aspects didn’t feel luxurious. On the positive side, we had great service from most of the staff. Our luggage was taken to our room and our car parked for us while we had a welcome drink. There were however a couple of occasions where staff acted like we were a nuisance, despite it being nearly empty. It didn’t always feel warm and friendly, and sometimes it felt like they weren’t used to seeing two men on holiday together. Our room was spacious and we were grateful for an upgrade to a pool view. The bed was comfortable, but we struggled to sleep as the room was far too warm all through the night, even with the fan that we had to request. Apparently the hotel is working on installing air con, but to not have it did not feel like luxury to us. I had to sleep with only the sheet for the duvet and even then I was too warm. There is some kitchen equipment but no coffee available. We were told that we could order what we wanted, but sometimes you want to wake up and enjoy a coffee on the balcony without having to call someone. We were sent information about cuisine, but only one restaurant option was open to us because the sister hotel was closed. This ruled out the fine dining option that we wanted for our honeymoon. We were not told about this before we arrived. It also meant that we struggled to get a spa treatment at a time that suited us. I don’t know how they were so full; we saw less than 10 other guests the entire time. This was a major disappointment as only one of us could get a facial. The food was tasty. Breakfast had a good number of options and a hot choice. We had dinner one night and it was delicious. We enjoyed our drinks too, but wine was overpriced and there was no English menu. The spa area is clean and well-equipped. We enjoyed that a lot. The gym was small and basic though. The pool area is lovely but it does not get a lot of sun and it is overlooked by apartments. Overall we had a pleasant stay but we booked this hotel expecting luxury and instead received something more basic. We have experienced better elsewhere and most likely wouldn’t return.
