Great hotel, well located, lovely rooftop terrace and pool, great spa with pool, sauna and steam room. Like an oasis of calm in a hot and vibrant city! Staff were friendly and courteous throughout, with only one exception. On our first morning (19th July) at breakfast we ordered 3 coffees: 2 cappuccinos and one latte. The lady we asked said, and I quote, “what is latte? It all goes in the same cup”. Italians everywhere would, I’m sure disagree, but that’s not the point. The point is that no member of hotel staff should ever speak to a guest in that way. It’s certainly the first time I’ve experienced service like that anywhere in the world. We were completely taken aback. However, that one bad experience does not take away from an otherwise very enjoyable stay. I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning a trip to Barcelona.

​We had a fantastic stay at Hotel 1898. The property feels like a beautiful piece of history, and the signature aroma the second you walk through the doors is absolutely gorgeous. Our room was incredibly high-spec, featuring a big, wonderfully comfortable balcony. The breakfast is a traditional luxury experience with a fantastic, varied selection, and the rooftop bar and dining are genuinely 10/10 with spectacular views. Another massive highlight was the indoor spa area; the steam room, sauna, and jet pool felt like a little slice of heaven. The indoor desk staff were also lovely, checking us in early and making us feel so welcome. ​My only complaint is the arrival no doorman service, although we were early of course. There was no one outside to help with our bags from the taxi. Ok for me, but if on her own my 60 year old mother may have found this difficult. Later on, the doorman ignored our feeble attempts at getting a taxi, while we were standing there trying to figure out how to hail a cab, he then immediately stepped in to help two other guests right after (we didn't even realise he was the doorman until that moment). We ended up order an Uber instead. While it wasn't a stressful issue for me, I really would have appreciated that extra level of attentiveness and help for my 60-year-old mother. ​Overall, it is a spectacular hotel with incredible high-quality amenities, but the front-of-house outdoor service definitely needs to match the luxury standard inside. Thank you for all your kind and gracious service, it does not go un noticed. We will return.

I have been staying at Hotel 1898 for over 15 years and even chose it for my honeymoon, so writing this review is genuinely disappointing. For many years this was always my first choice whenever I visited Barcelona. The location is excellent, the rooftop remains a lovely place to enjoy a drink, and the hotel has always held special memories for me. Sadly, over my last two visits, I have felt the standards and guest experience have noticeably declined. On both occasions I was checked in by the same member of staff, who I found rude, unwelcoming and uninterested. First impressions matter, especially for returning guests, and this was far from the warm welcome I had come to expect. Over the years many of the little touches that made Hotel 1898 stand out have disappeared. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace is no longer available, the breakfast order cards for room service have gone, and despite always booking one of the terrace rooms, there seems to be little recognition or appreciation of loyal returning guests. During this visit I couldn't help comparing the experience with other Barcelona hotels such as H10, Borneta, Duquesa and The Serras, all of which make an effort to recognise guests with small complimentary touches that leave a lasting impression. It isn't about the value of a free drink or gift. It's about making guests feel welcome and appreciated. After returning home, I took the time to write directly to the hotel and their Quality Manager, hoping my feedback would be taken seriously. Unfortunately, I have received no acknowledgement or response whatsoever. For a hotel that promotes customer service, this silence has been the biggest disappointment of all. I genuinely wanted Hotel 1898 to remain my favourite hotel in Barcelona, but after this experience and the complete lack of response, I no longer feel valued as a loyal guest. Unless significant improvements are made, I will sadly be choosing one of the many excellent alternatives available on future visits. I don't write reviews like this lightly, which makes this all the more disappointing.
